    Water Main Break

The picture on the attached link shows a section of 12" cast iron pipe that we had a break on recently. Any ideas on the cause? Most breaks caused by settlement are circular, this one is different. It was in a paved road, relatively light traffic, five feet of cover, no work going on nearby.

    Mixing distance in a pipe

In a water treatment plant, I need to start injecting caustic for pH adjustment. It will be in a 30" pipe with velocities in the 1.2-2.4 fps range. How far after the injection point will the mixing be complete enough so that a pH probe will give me a good indication?
