Controlling the size of S7 parts during heat treating

When I have my parts heat treated, they always come back either undersized or oversized. Is there something that will tell me how much the dimensions will change. If I had something that would tell how much per inch of length that would be great. I am mostly concerned with S7 material. Would...

    What caused this to fail

Would anyone want to list their best guess as to why this shaft failed? Shear, tension or compression? Was it a cyclic load or an abrupt failure? What can you tell from just this picture? Thanks

Blodgetts "Design of Welded Structures" question

I have just got a copy of this book and have a question that I hope someone can help me with. I am trying to design a water tank. I think that I need a stiffener around the top. On page 6.5-2 of this book, Blodgett shows an example "Tank with top edge stiffener". Nowhere in the formulas is...

    Deflection due to water

I have an open top, rectangular water container. It is constructed with a bottom and four sides. The containter is 40" deep x 110" wide x 440" long. The walls are 1/4" thick. I need to know how to figure what the deflection will be on the sides of the tank. Thanks

    Linear Bearing Question

I am wanting to have a rectangular base plate move on two parallel linear rails. The base plate will have a linear bearing in each corner. The plate will be driven from the center. My question: Is there a common (rule-of thumb)ratio of the width Vs. length for a bearing arrangment like this...

Deflection of beam in "X" and "Y"

I am trying to figure out how much the end of a cantilevered beam will displace if loaded at the end. I know the equation that will give me the displacement in the "Y" direction, but how do I figure the displacement in the "X" direction?
