Full load current greater than nameplate value

I have a pump motor that is measuring 9A on full load and the nameplate value is 3A. I'm no doubt opening myself up for derision, but What does this mean? Thanks

Checking the Full current load on a pump

Can anyone describe the definitive method of carrying out this task? Is it as simple as placing the Clamp meter on the phases and matching this up to the nameplate on the pump?
