As you know the Static Var Compensator SVC consists of branches TCR, TSC and Filters.
Can anyone give explanation why we can't do a smooth controlling in capacitors instead of fully conducting or fully off?

I have distance protection relay used for 33KV radial line around 80 KM long with more than 150 Distribution transformers.

usually TCR doesn't produce 3rd harmonics components, but i have seen 3rd harmonic filter in one SVC installation.
when i asked the people there, they told me TCR can produce 3rd harmonics in case unbalance is inherent in the system.
Can any body explain more?

Currently, our engineers writting a specification of installing a Fixed shunt capacitor (FC).
But in future project they may replace the FC by SVC.
Now, What shall they consider in the FC specification to use them as a filter when TCR installed.
