LA Abrasion testing and aggregate surfaced roads

In the process of designing a rural aggregate surfaced roads in Alberta, Canada and noticed the that an LA abrasion test for surfacing aggregate (i.e. unpaved road) was not applicable, only required for asphalt concrete pavements and base course aggregate. Just curious why that might be the case.

Using ESAL Thoery with Giroud and Han 2004 equation for geogrid reinforced unpaved roads

The Giroud and Han 2004 uses number of axle passes and wheel load in the equaition, can wheel load be replaced with one single 9,000 lbs wheel load (ESAL =18,000 lbs)and substitute passes with ESALs for road system ? Example using 100,000 ESALs for low volume unpaved road system with a 5 year...

Calculating impact load on bridge railing of a Cat 797 mining truck

In the conceptual stages of designing a bridge for 797 cat haul trucks (700 ton GVW), looking to calculate an order of magnitude estimate of the force of a 797 truck travelling at 50 km/hr on a concrete barrier. In order to calculate the impact force I need to know the vehicle crush and barrier...

    MSE Wall demolition

Trying to come up with a demolition plan for a 20 year old MSE wall with severe corrosion of internal metal straps. The wall facing is wire mesh and the wall is 13m high. Looking for some advice on sequencing of demo activities or what potential issues may arise. We were thinking of removing...

    MSE Wall Repair

Looking for any viable options to repair an aging MSE wall (20+ years old) with severe corrosion of the internal strapping. Someone suggested drilled soil nails with a shotcrete face as an option. The wall has a wire mesh facing and is about 20 m high. The wall will have to overcome large...

sizing a drop hammer using the FHWA Modified Gates Formula

I’m looking for a rule of thumb for sizing a drop hammer using the FHWA Modified Gates Formula. One suggestion is to size the hammer so that the pile reaches the desired capacity at approximately 3 to 10 blows per inch. The project I'm working on requires a pile capacity of 142 kips, with a 4000...

    Pile Driving Formulas

We currently use Engineering News with a FS of 3 for temporary work bridge installation in remote areas with little to no geotechnical information. I noticed then FWHA has adopted the modified Gates formula. Could any give advice on risks ? as I realize the Engineering News formula has it's own...

    Retaining Wall Prelim Costs

Looking for some prelim costs for three types of retaining structures soldier pile wall/timber lagging, sheet pile wall, and MSE. Wall is 5 m high, fill side, sandy soils. A cost per ft2 or m2 of wall face would be preferred.

Capacity reduction for damaged girder flange

I’m looking for some information on dealing with the reduction in capacity of a welded steel girder, due to damage on the tension flange within the middle third of the span. The bridge girder is a fracture critical member (2 girder system) with a 15 m simple span. The bottom flange 19X300 mm has...

maximum root opening for pipe pile splice

Looking for the maximum root opening for a pile pile splice. Complete penetration bevel groove weld, 45 degree bevel, 406 mm X 9.5 mm pipe pile, metal backing ring (50 X 6). I have a pipe pile slighly out of plumb (50 mm) and would like to take up some of the offset at the splice about 4 m down.

Pipe pile to cap beam connection

When connecting a pipe pile to an embedded plate on a cap beam of a bridge pier, which type of weld works best? fillet or a groove weld with a steel backing ring? I was told it is difficult to get a proper weld because of the difficulty in getting all the pile tops level enough to get each plate...

    Slope Stabilization on cemented sediments

Has anyone had experience with stabilizing cemented sediments with natural slope angles above the estimated angle on internal friction? The soils are silty glaciolacustrine deposits bonded with calcium carbonate. The soils naturally occur at natural slopes up to 420 but when they are opened up...

reinforced concrete diaphram wall between concrete filled pipe piles

I want to install a 5m reinforced concrete diaphram wall between concrete filled pipe piles on a bridge pier. Looking for some reference material or has anyone complete a similar design. I've sized the reinforcement for moment and shear due to lateral loading on the bent. Trying to determine the...

Precast concerete pile cap and embedded plate

Our client has asked us to look at an alternative precast pile cap design consisting of welded pipe pile to an embedded plate. They are looking at alternatives to speed up construction on a rush job. Looking for some reference material or advise on how to deal with this connect detail. I would...

Design of concrete diaphragm between concrete filled pipe piles

Our client has suggested looking at designing re-enforced concrete diaphragm between pipe piles on a pier bent (single row) with a precast concrete cap, approx. 5m unsupported pile length. The pipe piles will be re-enforced/concrete filled. The river in question has some significant ice loads...

    Temporary Foundation Design

I’m designing a temporary bridge foundation for 100 ft clear span bridge structure. Contractor would like to install on a log sill, as timber up to 1m in diameter is abundant on site. Looking for a reference that might deal with this situation. The foundation soils will permit 200 KPa allowable...
