    cutting compression spring for starter

    The spring is on the starter bendix. we need to cut the spring shorter to fully engage the bendix. What is the proper method for cutting spring down? Bendix needs to engage about an 1/8" more. We cut 0.080 off of spring and only gained about 0.020 when it compresses. looking for any suggestions...
