Is there a reference or some direction you can give regarding whether or not to use seam welded SS pipe versus seamless SS pipe in creating heat exchanger tube bundles?
I assume that heat treating for stress relief must be an issue. Any others?

Anyone implementing Lean in their shop? How is it working? Is it a struggle? Has there been any payoff? Have the workers fought or struggled against the implementation? Where do you or did you get your Lean training or assistance with setting up the process? Any major (or minor) negatives or...
I realize this isn't for troubleshooting, but thought you might have some engineering input.
My front windshield wipers only run in med or hi speed. In low or intermittent speed, they move about 12" and just sit there. Even in hi or med, I have to turn them off right when they get into the...
Asked this in Mechanical, but wanted a more widespread readership:
Anyone in the US hear of or deal with the Manufacturing Extension Partnership in their state (or any other state)? I am looking into the organization. They are funded by NIST, universities and other state or federal programs...

Anyone ever hear of this? Its kind of an NPO partially funded by the US government and set up in many states. Their goal is to help small manufaturing businesses in the US to make it.
I'm not sure exactly how they get paid or how they function.
Just curious if anyone has had any experience...
I'm switching over to this field from HVAC. I am an ME with mostly manufacturing, installation and controls experience- mostly all HVAC. I did work a little in controls and instrumentation for offshore vessels and cranes in the past, though.
I'll be working to design and modify smaller-sized...
I have been through two rounds of interviews with a company. I just got a call from the supervisor asking me to email him my salary requirements.
I would rather refrain and let them bring up a number first.
Any thoughts on what to do? There is no official offer, but he said I was in the...
Has anyone had a similar situation? Given the feedback and the responses, what would be your thoughts on the possibility of a job offer? Anything that I need to think about or be aware of?
I recently interviewed for an engineering position in engineering design firm in a different industry than...
I am in HVAC right now, but spent most of my 10 years in mechanical engineering in either DDC controls (for HVAC), instrumentation manufacturing (for liquid level control) and HVAC equipment manufacturing (again, mostly controls-related).
I just earned my PE license and although I realise I...
Any rules of thumb on sizing a diesel line if used to feed diesel from a large tank to some diesel engines if gravity and fluid head (from the height of the fluid at the top of the tank) are the only things causing the flow?

Can anyone recommend any worthwhile books and/or handbooks on HVAC system design (covering things like duct design, cooling load considerations, pipe sizing, etc..., etc...)?
I'm just starting to work as an HVAC design engineer for a consulting engineering firm, although I have been in the...
One client has a mechanical room right next to the reception area of an office. There are three 5-ton AHUs raised about 3 feet up inside the raised double doors facing the reception area and a return grille (about 7'W x 2'H) underneath the double doors. The return makes a lot of noise and the...
Just curious if anyone is in the field of forensics?
I have done some investigations pertaining to failures of products and whatnot in my industry (HVAC), but usually for the manufacturer or contractor for whom I worked- nothing legal or anything like that.
I am getting ready to go work for an...
I have been considering going out on my own. I just sat for and hope I have passed my PE exam. If so, this will give me more clout to enable starting up an engineering company.
I am an mechanical engineer with experince mostly in control systems relating to the copmmercial building HVAC market...
This has happened more than once and is happening one again- running into total jerks at the office. At my previous job, it was the boss. He was very disrespectful and crude. I couldn't deal with or even believe someone would be that way.
Now I am working for a controls contractor. There are...
I am considering beginning a consulting business in controls- mostly HVAC, but other forms as well. I am a mechanical engineer (should have PE after April of this year), but have specialized in controls for most of my 8-10 years experience (graduated over 8 years agom but worked 2 years of co-op...
Is there any way to focus a sonar signal so that the "cone" is more elliptical or oval shaped (basically flatened on two sides) rather than circular?
Just starting research on this subject and need to be pointed in the right direction.
Thanks,
Ed
I am researching the possibility of building a device which utilizes an underwater laser. Can anyone give me advice on where to start? Are there any tricky considerations for underwater use? Green laser instead of red and why? Is refraction due to water temps a problem, etc...?
I would really...
