Have you done some market research to see what the earning curve is for the positions you have applied for? It wouldn't hurt to take a look and see where you would be willing to land on the curve. Especially if these new positions are in different industries than what you are currently in.
I'm also on board with using Outlook to track my tasks. It's nice for keeping me on track with designs, and for higher priority or visibility projects I can set it up to automatically update my project lead for the mandatory status reports associated with hot projects.
I would think to find what you are looking for you may want to run a search for people with similar career paths or roles on a professional organization you are part of. Maybe ASME, AIAA, LinkedIN or something of the sort, and that's assuming there aren't more senior individuals to discuss...

Honestly it depends on your cube space. Most of ours are laid out in a way that the sound won't travel to your neighbor. That doesn't stop them from giving us the nice wireless headsets though, which make it easier to multitask since you can actually step away from your desk to some degree.
