Be interesting to read the commentary (in ~5yrs time) to see how these scaling factors were derived.

    Slab to jumpform wall connection

I assume one of the slabs is inside the corebox (eg stair landing, lobby slab etc), therefore the slabs either side of the wall will be poured at vastly different times.

    AS1170.4 Draft

To me it just seems engineers should be able to determine the mandated buiding base shears from something more than an equation introduced 15 years ago and with the only variables being height and lateral system. Something, Something 'significant figures'...

    AS1170.4 Draft

That's exactly my understanding. It's to stop non-representative favourable stiffness assumptions (eg cracking walls beyond oblivion and unrealistic Soil-Structure interaction). On the other hand, it's often the case when we model squat buildings in ETABS it'll tell us that the structure is...

    AS1170.4 Draft

New AS1170.4 draft is out for public comment, closing 18/01/24. Seems like reo rates may be on the rise again with the introduction of these two proposed admendments.

    AS3700 & BlockAid Chairs

Upon further reading, it would seem there is a discrepancy in defition of 'tie' between AS3600 and AS3700. What from I can tell, this is what AS3700 defines as a tie to restraint the vertical bars.

    AS3700 & BlockAid Chairs

Hi RG, The research paper behind the product explains the philosphy in more detail. I understand the product proposes the block can be designed as 'reinforced' (ie restraint to the vert bars via the grout annulus) in terms of AS3700 capacities.

    AS3700 & BlockAid Chairs

Hoping to get some industry feedback on whether anyone has successfully used BlockAid bar chairs in lieu of traditional rebar ties? This would then mean you can design as reinforced and Mu = 2. The following clause in the NCC essentially means 200 series blockwork needs to be designed as...

Hi Agent, I'd appreciate you're thoughts on my original thread too please if you don't mind?

RAM vs RAPT for cantilever deflections to AS3600

Multitude of variables here that will dictate the differences between the two softwares. Instead of trying to match the deflections, how about you first try and match the moment and shear distributions in the bands and slabs (or atleast explain the differences). Then you can start unpacking...

    Seismic Torsional Sensitivity - AS1170.4 & NZS1170.5

Thanks rscassar - I would agree that your design philosophy is conservative and should certainly be sufficient. Anyone else? Hoping Agent666 drops by and provides some Kiwi input.

    Seismic Torsional Sensitivity - AS1170.4 & NZS1170.5

It's common for modern commercial buildings in Australia to have an offset core to allow greater open plan flexibility. The mode shapes of such buildings usually demonstrate torsional behaviour, especially within the first two modes. Example: I know many international codes will penalise you...

AS3600 Clause 10.8 - Transmission of Axial Force through Floor Systems

There eurocode will allow an increase (~10%) in compressive strength when confinement is provided.

AS3600 Section 14, height limits on walls

Out of curiosity - what is the situation? A rear wall of a lift shaft with a massive riser adjacent?

Minimum Base Shear requirements for Dynamic Analysis

Only thing I can add is that Eurocode 8 doesn't require engineers to scale RSA base shears to a certain percentage of ESA base shears. From what I understood, the reason for scaling RSA to ESA is because it was census that ESA would be conservative and there is more uncertainty associated with...

Australian Journal of Structural Engineering - RW Chapman Medal

I see a lot of discussion regarding the new seismic design and detailing rules for AS1170.4/AS3600. Therefore it seems prudent to share this article: RC Walls and Seismic Design paper scores top structural engineering Medal Direct link to paper itself
