    Be sure the Nb/Cb is free of oxide. It can be a bugger in welds.

    Would you benefit from the addition of rhenium in medium carbon steel, other than the obvious high heat environs? Rhenium is a very interesting transition metal, with some very good qualities. Thanks.

    Tungsten in medium carbon steel

    Interesting. right now i'm experimenting with medium carbon, as I am after 100% lath martensite, for strength and tougness, with the nickel adding impact resistance. I'm just a little weak on the hardness. I need a tough 60Rc, using the chemistry close to 300m.

    Thanks for the responses. I happened to have some free W. I was not sure if tungsten resisted tempering, or it just uped' the average carbide hardness. Thanks.

    Looking for low 60's Rc @575F draw. The particular alloy is actually 4350 mod. so it's still med carbon.

    Would the addition of tungsten, .55%, to 4340 mod, (300m),contribute a few points of hardness after tempering to spec? I would like to add a little hardness without sacrificing strength or toughness or reducing the draw temp.

    Thanks very much. The reaction crucible is cyledrical, with cone shaped bottom. I have a bunch of magnets under the mould crucible to possibly help with slag seperation. ???? The MgO is a good idea. The blacksmith/sword maker is probably me ;) Thanks once again!

    Thanks for those links unclesyd. Also for the safety tips. I've made a few runs using a 5000 F rated furnace cement, but it takes a beating and needs repair after each run. The secondary crucible is the problem. I have to hold the molten charge, about 1 to 4 pounds, at heat, without damage to...

    Hello. I am looking for a supplier of magnesium oxide, aka, magnesia tar. There are a couple of forms it comes in, but it is basically the same chemical, and about the only thing available, outside black projects, that will routinely take 5 to 6000 degrees F. Thanks.
