Things are Starting to Heat Up - Part XIV

Nope... but other than our cold climate issues, it's likely very small. I don't drive and whenever I go out, I usually use public transit. I don't run an air conditioner. I usually eat veggies and almost no beef... chicken and fish, mostly.

Things are Starting to Heat Up - Part XIV

It's a Chinese form of socialism... and is working very well. In the last 75 years they have gone from one of the poorest countries in the world to one of the top. Their retirement age is "China's current retirement age is 60 for men, 55 for women in white-collar jobs, and 50 for...

You might want to look in a mirror... for its treatment of Covid and the recent Texas flood... the US may be in line for the new Darwin Award.

Things are Starting to Heat Up - Part XIV

I would suggest that China is far more industrialised than the US is. For profit, most companies took jobs from the US and moved them east.

    Typical Details

I often have 2 and sometimes 3... I live by drawing notes in lieu of specifications. Too often I've encountered old drawings where the specs are missing. On one major project in Winnipeg, the specs were inadvertently excluded from the Contract Set; the general notes saved the day. It was my...

Things are Starting to Heat Up - Part XIV

On a per capita basis, their carbon footprint is about 1.5 less than the US (the US is #1 for countries greater than 100M population) and China is manufacturing nearly everything. The US has a higher per capita footprint and they produce nearly nothing. The recent Texas flooding is a consequence.

Manager Says Keep the Restraints — I Think They’re Unnecessary. Who’s Right?

When you get into practice, you will find that you would retain the restraints for legal reasons, even if not necessary. If an owner/client wants you to do something that has no negative effect if it was removed... it stays. Should a failure occur, even for another reason, you would have no...

    Typical Details

I had two different types of standard details... the ones that showed information like a stepped down footing. It could be applied to a drawing without modification. The other type of standard detail might be a drawing sheet with an 'L' shaped stiffened slab foundation for a house. This would...

    Wind Load

I used 0.5 as originally planned... the equivalent to a fairly 'dense' chainlink fence. I would suggest the porosity was approaching about 90%. The structure is low to the ground and is fairly sheltered. The steel components are not in a dense pattern. Also did not use 0.85 x DL for...

    Wind Load

Closure on this... I've designed this with a reduced wind load based on an equivalent chain like fence resistance and I've used a 1/10 year return period wind load. I've designed the components for the full wind loading. I've picked up another reference... ASCE 10... Design of Lattice Steel...

Concrete exposed to both chlorides and sulphates

They are two different processes... The sulphate cause the formation on Etringite or gypsum which is expansive and causes the deterioration of the concrete.

Concrete exposed to both chlorides and sulphates

Unless you have a lot of slab, I'd err on the conservative side. I'd go for and HS or HSb mix with a 30 or 35 MPa strength. Check with the geotekkie...

Thread embedment required for bolt in tension

In response to your question... Not at all, but I'll check. Reply back.... "To weld to CSA W59, a weld procedure qualification will need to be completed prior to welding the structural parts. That being said, it shouldn’t be an issue welding with 7018/ ER70."
