    Engine - Air filter design.

I think you will find its like everything in design work. Calculations are essentially guesses in some instances, the real proof is how it runs and what restriction or not it causes. An easy starting point is find a similar cu in engine and start with what that manufacture uses. Save time and...

    Twin Engine V12 or 2x60°V6

It would be best to have a special crankshaft made for the rear engine, like mentioned it will be looking at twice what it was meant to take for torque.

    BSFC and RPM's

Nice lesson, I'm sure that engineers here learned lots.

I need your vote for a new Rotary HCCI engine !

Sorry but I really couldn't see much. And as far as a rotary engine, I thought I saw mention of pistons? Rotary engines don't have pistons.

What is the reason the circular holes are equipped with tightening bolts?

The answer to the question is they are there to clamp. The slots weaken that area somewhat so the material will move enough to allow the bolts to pinch the holes tighter. I guess that is what you were asking.

General IC Engine Theory Question - effect of cylinder count on torque, displacement equal

Around 155 cid per cylinder was one aircraft engine manufactures favorite combo, and too bad they weren't getting, 2hp / cu in back then.

exhaust gases manifold for two units ( no. 4, 5 ) increased the temperature up more than 500°C and a

And how are the temperatures being checked? Also check cam, valve timing, does this engine have replaceable cam segments?

General IC Engine Theory Question - effect of cylinder count on torque, displacement equal

In the old days in the aircraft engine world, the simple way to make more power was simply to add more cylinders. Not bigger cylinders just more, bigger cylinders would be less efficient as well as having to redesign the wheel of sorts. And you can do all the calculations you wish, in the end...

    BSFC and RPM's

I thank you Mike, good info. (Added on 6-1-17) The comparison I was looking for is, fuel use of a very slow speed engine to a faster speed engine of the same HP rating. Since a PC system engine would be less efficient than a DI engine I guess my old Cat engine would not be the correct one to...

    Syncronizer wear

I suppose it is possible. So is the torsional damper on the rebuilt engine new? How do you measure the vibrations? Most trucks that I have been around use nonsyncronized transmissions because they are a number one wear item especially with such high torques to deal with.

    BSFC and RPM's

I hope Catservice engineer reads this one. A genset would be the best because of steady load to do a comparison. Older Cat diesel engines where rated at pretty low rpms, since the low rpms represent lower air volume per unit time thus lower fuel flow. I would like to know how the economy of...

Best way to create 1/8" holes in 1" steel plate?

And with the last poster, I'd like to see dimensions of the parts. And second question is why? Why to all of it, why the fussy entry exit, why the finish etc. All the holes will need to be spotted, and small through spindle coolant Guhring drills are the way to go and will give good life...

    Viscosity Breakdown?

The mineral/synthetic blends are not something new, I used to use syn blend some years back. Here ya go. http://www.valvoline.com/our-products/motor-oil/durablend-synthetic-blend-motor-oil So out of all these words and numbers I see here in this post there is no mention of what viscosity the...

Design of durability tests for transmissions

So what is the size of the vehicle? What kind of loads are on the output shaft of the transmission? Is it a large earth moving machine or a race car? There are many transmissions that have been designed for most all applications. Why reinvent the wheel?

No load on engine and torque?

If the measuring device is not loading the engine then it would essentially read zero. So yes output is zero. Internally still takes torque and power to move the mechanical parts and the air.

    Bottom end failures

Is it the correct bolt for the application? Long enough? What engine?

    Air spring failure-vertical cracks

Choice of materials. What is the material? And how does it compare to other air bag manufactures? Country of origin etc.

    Crankcase Casting wall thickness

It will depend on many things, application for one, and HP rating. And of course the material you plan to use as well. FEA yeah, but in the old days it was also and still can be trial and error, using stress coat and strain gauges. Its not just a use this thickness or that thickness, its also...

    Main engine crankpin defects

First of all what brand and size is the engine? And a photo is what is needed. Any discoloration may have been present the day the engine was assembled. Those engines aren't exactly built up by the same caliber of people that assemble an F1 racing engine, its like any other job in the...
