Why is it that when I start a new drawing, having selected "metric" then create a dimension, then modify the properties of the units it still says feet and inches??

A sub-contractor of ours is creating AutoCAD 14 drawings for us in feet and inches, only problem is that we want them in metric. How do I change the units so that "64" goes from being 64ft to 64mm - similar to the way that I can change the units in Pro/Engineer from 64 feet to 64mm.
