Girls in STEM is failing both girls and STEM?

Will engineering registration expansion have anything to do with the price of tea in China?

Arizona’s Governor to Licensing Boards: What Is It That You Do?

I hear you. I built a fence in my backyard. No one cares. (tornadoes, and rural) When I lived in Louisiana, it would require a permit and design review (hurricanes, but in large city) I think we'd see far more industrial accidents if regulations go away. I have known far too many plant...

Arizona’s Governor to Licensing Boards: What Is It That You Do?

I don't think anyone is saying people should be able to falsely claim they're an engineer. Unless I missed a post somewhere.

Arizona’s Governor to Licensing Boards: What Is It That You Do?

I grew up, and currently again, reside, in rural America. Given some of the places I've worked, I'm quite familiar with areas that don't "have to" comply with modern building codes. However, the normalization and expectations that places do... has yielded voluntary compliance. I expect the...

Arizona’s Governor to Licensing Boards: What Is It That You Do?

Agreed. Simply asking the question or auditing efficacy is not, imo, a sign that someone wishes to do away with good regulation. Periodic evaluation, so long as it's done with a level head, is necessary. Especially when it's an organization serving the public.

Arizona’s Governor to Licensing Boards: What Is It That You Do?

Ah, I understand you, now. I completely misread the "tone" of your "what licencing boards are good for" statement. Plus I was probably biased after getting into a discussion with a couple friends just last night about this issue, who were wholly on the "he said the word engineer, he has to be...

Arizona’s Governor to Licensing Boards: What Is It That You Do?

@CheckerHater, I actually found that to be a sorry application of very good laws meant to protect the public. He was not practicing engineering nor selling services to the public under false pretenses. He made a claim that he's an electronics engineer, which I've seen no reason to doubt...

    A coming engineering shortage ? ---- Who agrees ?

At the risk of taking this thread off topic, I have to say LOL WHAT? I am no fan of the previous administration policies, OVER ALL, but I can certainly read. Worst economy in history? For WHOM? Rate of growth of USA GDP: http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?locations=US...

Girls in STEM is failing both girls and STEM?

Valid points and good suggestions for improvement. I disagree with the negative opinion of suggesting more women invest in a STEM related career. In any system, a minority group is able to be oppressed because it's convenient for the majority group to do so. It's often easy because the...

Gender Based Hiring Quotas in Australia

Discrimination comes in many forms. Some's ok. If we're still talking about sex/gender, then yes, it's wrong for any job where the sex is not directly tied to the actual job duties. Agree Agree, overall. Agree, overall. No one is immune, imo. Would have to address on a case by case basis...

Gender Based Hiring Quotas in Australia

Relevant analogy: I find it hard to argue with that. If I never thought there was a problem when there were nine men, something is amiss if the thought of nine women causes concern. If people are appointed based upon qualifications, and at some point it ends up being nine women, protesting...

    A coming engineering shortage ? ---- Who agrees ?

I don't necessarily disagree with @moltenmetal's assessment of Canadian engineering - I think similar happens in the USA. However, if I were to argue it (playing devil's advocate) I would look at the entirety of college graduates and their proportion of relevant employment after graduation. I...

Job Searching After Thirty Five Years

I've failed to get into the running for a job twice, now, where the person actually selecting the hire, could never get my resume. He wanted me to apply for the job, after working with me on other projects as a supplier. He read my resume in person, but said he couldn't even take the printed...

Gender Based Hiring Quotas in Australia

Hiring strategies would only rightfully be even-handed and without bias if the hiring being done would perform even-handedly and without bias. History shows us this isn't the case. Hence modified hiring strategies.

The hypothetical manager enacting such policies - apologies for the ambiguity. I was admittedly less than specific.

Gender Based Hiring Quotas in Australia

Those uppity ingrates. Refusing to labor after-hours for FREE. The gall! "mommy/daddy track" my ass. Avoiding exploitation is not a drawback. You're just promoting a culture that preys on the weaker willed.

Gender Based Hiring Quotas in Australia

Now and then I see articles/editorials about NASA's Katherine Johnson and Margaret Hamilton. They discuss the impressive accomplishments each of them made despite the steep uphill climb not required of their male counterparts. Invariably, I see people questioning why we're hearing about these...

    Dimensions and BIM

I will never understand the complaints about BIM being the ability to have oddball dimensions or dubiously-placed objects. This has always been the case with CAD of all kinds, and AutoCAD is NO LESS susceptible to negligent or untrained errors. I've seen all of these exact same errors in...

    9/11 Structural Engineer's poll

I don't know much more than that he's a TV celebrity, champions scientific endeavors, and worked as a mech eng for Boeing, years ago. I don't think he gets much more consideration than that. I don't think anyone believes he's our generations Einstein. He's just popular.
