I calculate the circumferance of the od of the tube minus one wall thickness for the length of weld. Most of the people I deal with use this, but not everyone.
abba7114, no. This was the callout on a customer supplied print. The question was brought up "what is the tolerance on the pitch and length" and I went looking for the answer. Our customer has eliminated their welding engineers so they were no help. This print is about 30 years old, no...
The WPS is written from the governing code. We weld to AMS-STD-2219, D17.1, D1.1 and four customer weld spec.s. none of these specifications define these issues. In the past I've defined the length as a minimum and the pitch as a visual thing. Even looking in AWS B1.10 and B1.11 weld inspection...
I have a fillet weld that specifies a length(.38") and pitch(1.00"). I need to know the tolerance of the length and pitch, I've looked in both AWS A2.4 and A3.0 with no avail. Could someone point me in the direction of the spec that defines this?
Thanks,
Nathan
I'd go to the library and check out a book or video on six sigma or lean manufacturing. You may be implimenting certain parts of these, but aren't using the latest buzz words.
Rich2001,
They're pretty careful with the ER347, our customers don't allow any cracks in the weld, period. Our welders methods are similar to what you list. 349 seems to solve a little of these problems. We don't have a copy of AWS A5.9, I wish we did, then maybe I could explain the use of 349...
The quality system costs us about $60k a year, in maintaining a quality person to keep the audits and us updated and the recertification process. This hasn’t stopped our customer from moving the product we make for them to “other parts of the world. The system does show you your shortcomings and...
I machined thousands of cast iron fuel pumps and other than orange hands it held tolerances fine.
If you're dealing with thin walled parts, there maybe an issue, but it would relate to any other material that's thin.
I don't know of any heat treat cycles cast iron reacts favoratable to, but...
Other than the one bad experience Gibbs tech support is great. They have also started a forum which has good info on. Try to find a user group for each also.
Have you looked at Featurecam, this software has some potential, in my opinion.
Make sure you get demos from both Mastercam and Gibbs. And ask lots of questions. We have Gibbs and our biggest issue was the sales rep. said he'd write our posts, probably to keep a little more money in his pocket. Absolutely do not fall for this, it took over a year to get posts that were...
Sorry I haven’t responded sooner. I took a break from this forum. Metengr is right, but some of our customers allow 349 per AMS5782. According to our welders, they said they have had cracks in the puddle at the end of their joints if they pull the weld rod out too fast. No real proof that what...
Again it depends on your setup and machine. The H900 condition is getting hard and would be tough to machine and hold this type of tolerance. Roughing and, finish anything your tolerances allow prior to heat treat would be essential (remember to calculate for heat treat shrinkage). I’d machine...
Thanks Griffy,
This is what I was looking for. The reason I'm asking is a friend of mine works for a company that out sources all their machining. They want to bring it back into the states. I told him I'd help find companies to make the parts, but I know nothing about screw machines. "out here"...
Don't say that, my daughter's turning 17 in a few days!! Thanks for the info. I'll start searching the internet. There's a couple of used machinery dealers out here. I may go see what they have. There was a couple of machines on ebay, I couldn't tell you if they were past their prime.
Thanks guys for the information. It's what I was looking for. I'd like to find more information on setting up screw machines, I haven't started looking for any yet though.
Nate
So for cycle time do you quote only the longest running tool(multi spindle) or do you add the cycle time of each tool? Are all screw machines multi spindle? Are CNC screw machines faster to setup than manual? I want the speed of setting up a CNC machine but the economical prices of a screw...
Does anyone have information or know where to get some on estimating machined parts produced on a screw machine? I've quoted parts made on machining centers and lathes, both CNC and manual, but no experience with screw machines.
Thanks,
Nate
Sometimes there are alternate edge break sizes for holes vs. the remainder of the part. A couple of examples: some rivets require a chamfer of a given size, some studded features require a zero edge break when installed.
