Plywood floor - nail or screw?

I have a light framed wood office building. The floor is two layers of plywood. I specified #8 nails for fastening plywood to wood floor joists. This is the typical way I saw. The contractor suggests using screws in lieu of nails. I did saw the nails popped out from outside deck for another...

metal stud plywood sheathing shearwall - blocking

I have a light gauge metal stud shear wall with plywood sheathing. The edge is blocked. My question is about the edge blocking. What is the typical detail or construction method for the blocking? I understand a track, or 2x wood can all be used as blocking. But I'd like know the common or...

steel pipe embedded in cored hole in concrete filled with epoxy

I saw a common practice: core holes (3" dia. example) in concrete, embedded steel pipe (1.5 dia.) in the hole, and then fill the holes with cement type epoxy. My question is how to analyze this kind of pipe anchorage if there is moment, shear, tension forces at the bottom of pipe? From link...

    corrosion in steel pipe

Dhengr: Yes, the fish on some photos is probably more than 6' long and more than 500 lbs. This fish hoist is about 20 yards away from ocean. All, thank you for your recommendation. I will suggest to replace it.

    corrosion in steel pipe

This is a fish hoist. Please see attached picture. The top cap of main post is rusted away as shown in attached picture. There are some rust areas at the post bottom. The inside condition cannot be seen. I need to evaluate this hoist if it needs to be replaced, repaired, or still okay. The main...

Analysis tools for 2-span continuous glulam beam with cantilever span at one end?

I use woodwork to do the wood design. The cost is $295. I think Enercalc can do it too. You can try the demo version quickly.

    Opening in Concrete Shear Wall

My first approach will be check if it is working or not if there is that opening. If that does not work, then will try to retrofit it. maybe increase wall thickness or attach FRP or.... What kind of retrofit method will be depends on what will be inadequate.

    Opening in Concrete Shear Wall

Is it a new structure or existing one? Is the door or the opening still needed?

cracks in corner of building slab

It is shrinkage crack. Something at the corner restrained the concrete shrinkage and caused the crack.

impact load factor for HVAC air handling unit

The foot print size is 5 ft x 3.25 ft. The four supports are at the four corners. Thank you.

impact load factor for HVAC air handling unit

Also there is other HVAC air handling units (840 lb) and air cooled condensing units (860 lb each) will be supported by slab on grade. Will a 6" thick slab on grade be adequate or is there some reference I can use to do the calculation?

impact load factor for HVAC air handling unit

The HVAC air handling unit is supported at four corners. Which impact factor should be used? Below are from ASCE (2) light machinery, shaft- or motor-driven, 20 percent; (3) reciprocating machinery or power-driven units, 50 percent; Thank you!

Bearing wall and column footing - thickened slab or strip/spread fooing

The formal geotechnical report came. It is only state that "based on column load of 21.1 k and wall load of 3.16 klf, settlements of on the order of 3/8 inch were computed. Differential settlement is not expected to exceed 1/4 inch". There is NOTHING saying that the slab on grade should be...

Bearing wall and column footing - thickened slab or strip/spread fooing

mijowe and a2mfk, thank you for your quick responses. Just get an email from geotechnical engineer saying that "Some settlements can be expected for the footings. Perhaps, as a precautionary measure, footings for bearing walls and columns should not be poured monolithically with slabs on grade...

Bearing wall and column footing - thickened slab or strip/spread fooing

I am designing a light framed two story office building. The walls are light gauged steel stud wall with sheathing. The floor is TJI joists and wood beams. The roof is wood truss with sheathing. The area at each level is about 50'x80'. There are bearing walls at both exterior and interior. The...

    Splice in the mid-span

Thank you for all your help. I am reviewing contractor's engineer's calculation. What is the equation for allowable tension capacity for stainless steel bolt? The bolts are SS316, 3/4 inch diameter. We do not have ASCE 8-02 in office. I can find the allowable shear capacity from book or by...
