    pre-ignition triggered by lubricating oil

hi there. am puzzled by your question. sounds like you are designing something very experimental. designing a high output Diesel engine from scratch is an awesome task. forgive my asking but this question is a little basic for such an involved project. more info will get you a clear cut...

calculating new cooling system for new pick up with swapped engine

hi there. I am sure that many of us here would love to help you,but we need a bit more information to work with. size of engine, est hp,weight of truck, type of fuel.... bundle it up and lets have a look. M6

    Air Contamination of Cooling System

99% of all the engines i've ever worked on(lots) have never had problems with air in the cooling system. so its not something i'd worry about. i would worry about applying a hard (-26" HG) vacum to any cooling system.

Estimated cost of AC equipment for large scale PV design

you should begin by talking to the power engineers at the utility company that you plan to connect with. they will tell you what you must use. sounds as though you are a bit out of your depth here my friend. really a 100MW system?

cranking a diesel engine by hand

i used to work on old cars for a living. you develop lots of muscles hand cranking those old 6:1 compression model T fords etc. gotta be arnold swartzenegger to hand bomb an automotive diesel.

Any ideas on how to get my home built engine working?

i admire your determination, however i think this project is a waste of your time. your time could be better utilized in drinking beer and chasing women. just sayin'

    Diesel fuel possibilities

using gasoline is not a good idea, for one gas has less btu/lb than diesel fuel. if you could get your hands on some GTL diesel fuel, that would greatly help in your situation. GTL diesel is made from natural gas,it has 30% more lubricity than ordinary diesel,it has a cetane rating in excess of...

    spacing of caliper

hello all. friend of mine is assembling a cobra kit car(high end kit) his front brake calipers would not line up with the rotor,he was advised to put hard washers under the mounting suface of the caliper, thus moving it to the inside and line up with rotor. my opinion is that this is not safe...

Detroit Diesel 6v92 crank shaft failures

it is unusual to break the front of any crank, especially on a Detroit 6v-92. i would think if the crank and the couplings have been breaking, maybe you have too much of a load there. this may be a hydraulic load that is an on/off kind of application. so a high load that cycles like that would be...

Diesel & Gas Gens Sync. Problem

hi assuming that your synchronizing controls and procedures are ok,then its likely the governors are not compatible. the Cat genset probably has a very precise goveror, whereas the gas engine may not. could you tell us what engines you are dealing with? thanks

diesel and 2 stroke oil -> yet again.

there was a lot of discussion a couple of years ago when we went to ULSF(ultra low sulfur fuel) many issues both real and imaginary about fuel lubricity or lack of. i did some experimentation with a detroit 8V92 tt engine. i doped the fuel 100 gal or so with 4 litres(1 gal) of mobile 1...

    Heavy Shrink Fit

wow!thats quite the project. if you assemble with a .035" interference fit and the disk expands by .030" then your effective interference will only be .005". it would not be safe even at 1800 rpm. i have done lots of 10 to 20 ton press fits cold on 5" and 6" dia shafts,no problem. you may...

Cummins NT855 F2 on fire pump

dicer with all due respect, putting any engine on a dyno would be the very last resort. if a cummins will start and run ok but will not 'pull a load',and the pump checks out ok off the truck, its most probably fuel supply. unless its something really out of the box, such as squirrel nests in the...

Cummins NT855 F2 on fire pump

i am assuming that this is a firepump on a fire truck. usually when a diesel egine will start and run ok,but fail to pick up a load as in your example THAT is a lack of fuel supply. You said the pump was checked and found to be alright, how about the fuel supply to the pump?. I have seen this...

    The good news about windfarms

seems that windmills are a hot topic nearly everywhere. i really don't think that they are that ineffective,as there are thousands in use, surely there can't be that many stupid people, companies, governments.(i'm an optimist) am aware of tax subsidies,i think that results in some inappropriate...

    determine flywheel weight

was discussing with a friend who is starting to build a kitcar. the car is configured for ford engines. he is thinking of using a ford crate engine. new 302 engine built to 340 hp @6500. the finished car will weigh 2700 to 2800 lbs. question:the ford built engine does not come supplied with a...

    cat cooling systems

gentlemen thanks for your tips. we will take a close look at both the block heaters and the electrical bonding on the engine block & rad. M6

    cat cooling systems

thank you for your thoughtful replies. we shall look carefully at the galvanic flow and the combustion gases in the coolant(my pet idea). we have similar problems with our winter equipment fleet, sits most of the year, rads seem to rot(corrode) quite quickly. one common thing is both the gensets...

    cat cooling systems

we have several cat gensets,3500 series and 3600 series.in the last few years we have had to replace 3 rads and 1 jacket water aftercooler core due to corrosion. the antifreeze is as per the cat recommendation and is changed out every 2nd year(usually). we monitor the additive levels but still...

    compressed air car

has anyone seen an article on compressed air cars? i think this might be an interesting backyard project. i looked at building an electric car but the price for batteries is just nuts. any thoughts?
