I'm looking for information on how to replace the stem packing on a Plug packing type system without having to disassemble the valve. Just never worked on one of these and thought it would be easier to ask for help. Any web sites or suggestions?

Shot in the dark here but we use a lot of inflatable seals in the vacuum industry. Could even pull a vacuum behind the seal when you want it to open up. Not sure on your size requirements but this works quite well.

Are you doing the thruster valving on or off the shuttle model. I'm thinking you stay with what you have and look at a better way to get the air to the model. Take a look at www.beswick.com, they specialize in miniature tubing and fittings.

I'd go with Kapitan's suggestion, they make a curved torch tip specifically designed for this application, check you local welding supply. If you do go with the electric drill, you could use an end mill to remove the head. I think you might end up using a combination of methods.

Try using a paint stripping compound to remove the lead paint from the steel to cut. Any high heat source will vaporize the lead. If you have a large amount try an abaitment company. Low heat methods will still generate the lead waste that must be dealt with.

Check with a couple of the companies that make metal seated relief valves. Surface finish will be important but also depends on the geometry of the seat design. They can be a hastle to repair as seats must be in good shape, line up as designed, and completely parallel as pointed out before.
The valve I am taking out has a 5.75 inch bore in it and I would have to maintain the same Cv. I think any other type would require a set of adapters to mate to the 6 inch 1500 lb rtj flanges that already exist. I'm talking to Flowserve to see what they can do for me.
