    Baseplate to nut contact

Picture is attached, although you can't tell that the foundation has tilted.https://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=eea8bfd4-b4f9-4c22-825e-44284ad2ff59&file=20240801_125929.jpg

    Baseplate to nut contact

Hello, I have a situation where a steel column (exterior, W12) is leaning due to the foundation heaving about 3/4". The foundation is at least 30 years old, so is the steel. I guess the issue was recently notice by the facilities. In order to correct the issue "temporarily", the site crew...

    12" CMU fire rating

BA, I think you are correct. That appears to be a reference to horz reinforcement.

    12" CMU fire rating

Thank you all. @BA, just checked the drawings again. Built in 1972, in Chicago. The drawings show "Wall reinforcing every second block course". Which likely means grout @ 16" oc.

    12" CMU fire rating

I am looking at a 12" cmu wall from 1970s. The drawings appear to show the wall grouted @ 48" oc. I am trying for find some fire rating dates for CMU from that era but not finding anything. What be a good resource for this information? Thank you.

    F1554-Gr 55 Gavlanized-Welded Studs

Is there a load chart available for using these F1554 anchors as welded studs to a plate? Thank you.

    CMU-Cantilever height

I am looking at aprox 13' tall exterior CMU wall. Non-load bearing. Of course it will have to resists lateral loads (likely wind, since its Michigan). Before I start designing in detail, are there any cmu max height requirements for a cantilever wall? Thanks,

15' tall, 8" cmu wall, cure time?

Single story masonry building with precast roof. Wall height aprox 15', 8" cmu. My question is about putting the roof (precast planks) on the wall once the wall is complete. How long should the contractor wait before placing the loading the wall with planks. Thanks.

    Digging around 12' pier

Consider a 3'x12' deep pier foundation supporting an out door structural column. The contact tor was supposed to pour a pipe within the concrete. The contractor forgot to do that. They are recommending digging down to one side of the pile 9' deep to install the pipe and fill the void with grout...

    Smart grid

What exactly is a Smart Grid?

    Exp joint-190'x232'

JAE. Thanks. My structure is concrete so I think I should be able to go 232' w/o a joint.

    Exp joint-190'x232'

190'x232' sports arena (single story). Roof is metal deck on steel trusses. The structure itself is concrete a frame (columns wand beams). The temp range is 90 F. But the project is an area where air-conditioning (heat and cooling) may not be functional. I can't decide if an building expansion...

    Short circuit force direction

Is Asymmetrical SC ever used in design? My understanding is that bus work as well as ground grid is designed for Symmetrical only.

    Short circuit force direction

Thanks Bill. Is SC force always horizontal (and perpendicular) to the bus? And typically of the three phases, does it develop only in two?

    Short circuit force direction

Consider a 138kv system with 4" bus for each phase (attached example). In which direction do the SC forces on each bus act? I am trying to figure out if any SC forces will make their way to the foundation or if they cancel out at the beam. Talking to one engineer, he mentioned that the SC forces...

Ducts for secondary (12 KV) running

Thank you all for the feedback. This is very informative. I had a feeling that the separation between the ducts is driven more by magnetic fields created by power cables and there inference with each other, and not so much by the heat generated. Is that about right? I am not EE so if I sound...

Ducts for secondary (12 KV) running

Ducts for secondary (12 KV) running at 90 to each other. At the point of intersection, how much of a separation is recommended and what should the infill be? I saw numbers of 2' to 4' of "fluidized thermal break" but I can't understand why and how this is determined.

    TR fire wall forces?

Thank you all for the input. I have always thought of these walls as fire walls and not blast walls. In the past I have desgined them for conservative wind load. And to me, these walls should be deemed sacrificial with a good chance that the wall may have to be re-built in case of a large fire.

    TR fire wall forces?

Do you consider and blast loads in the design of a fire wall for a transformer?

Seismic design of concrete water tanks

I understand that I have to use ACI 350 for concrete. But for seismic forces, what standards should I be using?
