Sill sealer and wood rot in residential wooden framing

It is a thin piece of foam between the sill and foundation wall

Sill sealer and wood rot in residential wooden framing

It is my understanding that sill sealer is to prevent air leakage into the basement or unvented crawlspace. You can just caulk the sill plate to get the same effect.

Evaluating the stability of a single I beam

Is there not some lateral load from what you are supporting you need to apply besides just looking at LTB stability?

Sill sealer and wood rot in residential wooden framing

Right or wrong, building a house is all about picking your battles. This is not one i would worry about. There will be a lot more that do matter.

Sill sealer and wood rot in residential wooden framing

I have been in over 5000 crawlspaces and have never seen this to be an issue. I would put my energy elsewhere.

Sole proprietor as engineer or business man.

They are going to pierce it anyway. " And while my wife and other family may not add as much insight, they still ask curious questions that I have to think of an answer for or help hold me to my goals. " I guess I should be writing off this trip i am on with my Grilfriend then. She asks a good...

Sill sealer and wood rot in residential wooden framing

I don't buy it. Millions of houses have been constructed without it and they manage just fine.

Puleeze! Nobody is buying that your extended family is your "Board". No sole proprietor in our business needs a board.

Sole proprietor as engineer or business man.

We can try to justify all of this tax dodging in our minds but it really comes down to what an IRS agent is going to accept IF you get audited. Taking my family to Disney World under the guise of a "Board Retreat", I seriously doubt it.

Whats the deal with hip roofs

Many of the incestuous engineers around here will just call out a double rafter on each side of the hip peak in an effort to "brace" it. No connection called out to the ceiling joists or anything. It also does not seem to matter to them if the ceiling joists are perpendicular to the rafters. I...

Steel Beam to Wood Post Connection

Honestly, in my area, I have seen a flush residential steel beam fastened to wood support maybe 2 times in the last 30 years.

    HOT TUB - gut check

Would you be relying on friction only or would you have a nailer bolted to the bottom flange?

    HOT TUB - gut check

We still don't know if this is a one-sided connection to the beam or not. If it is, I'd be packing out the beam and using hangers to gain at least a bit of torsional resistance. This was recently discussed.

lag bolt in middle of two ply 2x4

I doubt you will find anyone to be on board with this. Although, this is how 4x4 knee-brace connections to deck beams are done in my area.

Easy foundation work or a trap?

For better or worse, I do a fair amount of these. The AHJ requires an engineer design and "sign off" post construction. It is basically showing helical piers every 5-6 ft with the footing notched out for the bracket. For sign-off, we use photos and the boring log showing install pressures that...
