    Breaker testing for insurance requirements

Insurance company just wants to see a sticker on the front of the breaker with a date less than 10 yrs ago.

    Breaker testing for insurance requirements

Thats good to know. I had thought that primary was the only way to test all the components, but that there was a risk of damage to the breaker. We're going to go through about 20 breakers of so, so it will be a good job. Contractor will be doing the testing, we'll be doing the lifting and the...

    Breaker testing for insurance requirements

Insurance company wants us to test all of our unit substation secondary breakers. They all GE AK breakers 600 and 1200A. They have all been retrofitted with AC Pro trip units within the last 10yrs. Should we use primary or secondary injection for the tests. I don't think primary is a good...

    Substation battery nominal voltage

We installed the batteries today without any problems. Tommorow we will connect them to the charger and let the charge for 72hrs. After that a load test, and we can hook them back up to the swgr. I believe the instructions said that the Lead/Calcium didn't need to be equalized, and also that the...

    Substation battery nominal voltage

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I've gone through the literature, and have the specs just wanted to hear that its common. Under what circumstance would you purposely omit a cell or two? I would guess if you were going to have to equalize online that might put the voltage a little high. I'm...

    Substation battery nominal voltage

I'm installing a new battery next week in our main substation, and wanted some advice. Load will be 12 GE magneblast breakers. Nominal voltage is 125, closing coil is 90-130 95A and the trip coilis 70-140 6A. The system I'm replacing consisted of 54 cells but looking at the PO 60 were purchased...

Thanks Zog. I'd like to see that report alsso.

    Production resetting protective relaying

Good advice. Politics can get ugly. Don't large plants usually have policies for these things? They can't all be like the wild west.

    Production resetting protective relaying

That's something we can look at in the future, but the old GE relays we use are still working without any trouble. I'd just hate to have an incident due to no policies regarding the big breakers.

    Production resetting protective relaying

Targets are reset, but there is no log.

    Production resetting protective relaying

We use electromechanical relays also, and I agree that its important to see if it was time or instantaneous, and especially ground. I'd just hate to see someone hurt, or for the plant to be damaged beyond repair.

    Production resetting protective relaying

If I had the authority I would. I'm just the guy who has to come out and fix the problem after the smoke has settled. Management seems open to suggestions about some type of policy to replace the lack of one, and I'd like some input on how it's done elsewhere.

    Production resetting protective relaying

As the subject says, production resets the relays without any thought about a downstream fault. This is on 4.16 GE switchgear from the 50's. Faults are uncommon, but when there is one the relays are reset, and the breakers are closed several times before an electrician is called. We don't have...

    IEC Starters

I prefer NEMA in most cases. They seem to last longer, and in most cases are easier to rebuild.

Earth Resistance Testing in a large industrial facility

Your original post is exactly how we do our ground testing at our facility. We start at the utilities substation and perform a fall of potential. I believe that you furthest stake is supposed to be some multiple of the total length of the grid. If your facility is built on one big interconnected...

    GE IAC relays.

I have the manual, but the section on burdens for the tripping coil really threw me off. After looking more closely at the manual, I came across the details for calculating the tap setting using the ratio of the ct. That was what I was looking for, I just looked a little too hard. I should have...

    GE IAC relays.

I'm having a hard time grasping the tap settings on these relays. Is there a simple explanation for setting them up properly. I'm not looking at making any changes, just wanting to understand how to select the proper taps.

    Re potting Magneblast breaker bottles

I don't see why it would be considered 3rd world. We don't have the luxury of ordering a whole new switchgear, and I think that inspecting and trying to repair is better than doing nothing. 3rd world would be filling it with roofing tar, and wrapping it with 33. How would you fix this problem...

    Re potting Magneblast breaker bottles

Definately not a retrofit. No vacuum bottles either. I was refering to the porcelain insulators containing the primary disconnects. I guess the look like "bottles". We recieved the Raychem HVIS for the bolted joints, and also their HV heat shrink tape for the bars themselves. The torch they...
