I'm running into issues trying to understand the document numbering for MIL documents. Is there somewhere that the numbering convention is defined?

I'm trying to link MIL-P-23377 to MIL-PRF-23377 but cannot find any definitive documentation to link them other than the last 5 digits. What's the difference between the "P" and the "PRF"?

MIL-P-23377 Epoxy Polyamide
MIL-P-23377H MIL-PRF-23377
MIL-P-23377 ( MIL-P-23377H ) ( MIL P 23377 ) ( MIL-PRF-23377 ) is a two component, corrosion inhibiting, polyamide primer. This epoxy primer offers excellent corrosion and chemical resistance over properly prepared aluminum and steel substrates. This primer meets Type 1 (standard pigments), Class C (strontium chromate) and was designed to be topcoated with urethane or epoxy topcoats such as MIL-C-83286B, MIL-C-85285C or MIL-C-22750D or MIL-C-46168.
