max Ratio Reinforcement to Concrete area ?

The maximum reinforcement ratio in reinforced concrete is there to prevent brittle/unexpected failure. When you have excess steel in tension, concrete in compression is going to crush before the tension steel yields/plastically deforms. For a column I don't know why this would be a problem...

    nonlinear behavior

There are two major types of nonlinearity: 1. Material nonlinearity as dhengr outlined above 2. Geometric nonlinearity In general, linear approximations to problems are a good representation to actual physics when displacements, strains, temperature gradients, rotations etc are "small". (but...

    Simplicity Approaching Functional Perfection

271828: I work at a VERY international firm. Around half of our engineers and a good percentage of our projects are international. While there are a few poor communicators among the native English speakers, the majority of communication problems stem from having English as a second language. I...

    Long-slotted holes as expansion joint

Also I couldn't find anything that rules out the use of a non-standard washer between plies for a slotted connection. The above section is a requirement for the outer ply only.

    Long-slotted holes as expansion joint

connectegr: I'm looking at the 2009 RCSC spec and trying to find where it states that non-steel washers are not allowed. Do you know where this is stated? I found the following: 6.1.2. Slotted Hole: When a slotted hole occurs in an outer ply, an ASTM F436 washer or 5/16 in. thick common plate...

    Long-slotted holes as expansion joint

Thanks to everyone who shared their opinion. I'm on the camp that says a shear connection with long slotted hole for expansion is not a good idea. Now I need to find code references, provisions etc to back this up. Has anyone seen something to this effect anywhere?

    Long-slotted holes as expansion joint

nutte: "The spec doesn't make allowance for shear being tranferred through bolts in a joint that are not at least snug tight. " what is this spec you are referring to?

    Long-slotted holes as expansion joint

slickdeals: thank you! Are there any codes, design guides etc that doesn't allow the use of long-slotted holes for this purpose? As far as I can tell the AISC manual and the AISC high strength bolt design guide doesn't say anything about accommodating movement along the slot; just that the...

    Long-slotted holes as expansion joint

What is your opinion on the use of long-slotted holes to accommodate thermal/wind induced movements (not temporary but as a permanent expansion joint)? The long slot is in the horizontal direction; gravity load is normal to the direction of the slot. I'm looking for references that advise...

View nodal normals visually in CAE

johnhors: The quoted bit about incorrect normals is directly taken from the Abaqus documentation and I referenced the location in my previous post.

View nodal normals visually in CAE

"No ! Element properties are determined solely by their node topology and associated material. Other elements referencing the same nodes will not have any influence. Just about every elementary text on FEA starts with a discussion on beam elements. You appear to be very confused, it would be...

View nodal normals visually in CAE

""I'm concerned about messing up the node normals" Why? How are they messed up? Even if you could view normals at nodes, what could you do about them? " I'm pretty new to Abaqus. If I understand correctly, abaqus averages node normals for to joined members, if the angle between the elements is...

View nodal normals visually in CAE

Is there a way to display nodal normals in CAE? So far the only way I could find to visually view any normals is from Common Plot Options to turn on normals for elements, but not the nodes themselves. And I can only view this after running a job, in postprocessing. I can check the node normals...
