Since you don't use free forms, I would use the "Soft Blend" feature.
You already know the tangency distance from edge to be blended. You can use a section curve or a sketch, etc to generate a curve at the desired location.

From what you are describing, I would use a "Break-Out" Section.

A simple toggle would be nice, however I regularly use the "Broken View" function to provide a break line where needed.
This function is simple to use and provides you several different styles to choose from and allows you to create a custom break line if you wish.
