Wondering if anyone has experience with code compliance with paver/pedestal systems.
I am building 9psf pavers on a pedestal system at about grade level. These systems are becoming more common but would never meet wind uplift code requirements (Calculated to be 26psf on a 120mph wind). My...
Agreed. I would assume 0 load on the tie back and only the vertical downward load of 1000#. That is why there are few failures. Certainly most parapets could support a purely vertical compressive load of this magnitude. But that is funny. Does it LOOK like it can? No disrespect to window...
AGREED! But certainly hooks can and should be an option in some cases. I think there needs to be a standard or uniform way to evaluate the loading and wall conditions. I come up empty in my research on the subject however.
Thanks, the reality is that hooks are being thrown on parapets all over the city. Until failures start occuring, this will be an aceptable approach. Parapet clamps are not permitted because they do create a leverage and impose bending on the structure. I was wondering if you folks new about...
Actually, there is alot of work being performed directly from parapet clamps hanging on the parapet itself. I was looking into how to properly identify the loads imposed by the 1,000 pound scaffold setup.
If a concrete slab does not meet the required air-entrainment, can the slab be rejected entiriely? In this case, the testor failed to reject the concrete at the time of the pour even though he identified the issue at the time of the pour. He is now asking that the entire slab be removed and...
Thanks all for your comments. My analysis came up with a calculated snow drift of 2.63ft based on Figure 7-8 of ASCE-07. However, the clear height from the top of the balanced snow to the top of the parapet is 3.41ft. I do think that the 2.63ft controls and that the high parapet does not...
What effect would raising a parapet wall height have on snow drifts on the "existing" roof structure? A one story store is raising the parapet (from 4' to 6') with light gage framing and a kicker at a 45 degree angle which I guess sheds the load immediately adjacent to the parapet. I was...
I am looking to provide short concrete (or block) columns in a crawl space to support a wooden beam (supporting first floor above). There has been some settlement of the existing block columns which I assume is due to a poor underlying soil condition.
My thought is to construct a 12"...
I am in the process of restoring a concrete parking garage topped with asphalt designed for 2000# concetrated loads (not alot considering weights of asphalt spreaders, rollers and bobcats with filled buckets)
I understand I can allow higher loads during construction (restoration) since they are...
I am involved in a project where we are restoring concrete spandrels or as I hear them refered to as "eyebrows." Each floor line of a multistory building the concrete has deteriorated (water intrusion leading to rebar corrosion and concrete spalling). The question is, in making these repairs...
I am building a pergola off a house. 2 main 2"x 12" beams run perpendicular to the house wall (17' apart) and are properly secured (fixed) to the wall on one end and to a 6x6 post (for each) on the other. These main beams are 17' long and 2x8 beams run accross them at 12"o.c. parrallel to the...
Yes...but the studs are 2x4's. 2 trimmer studs cannot take this load.
I do not design wood structures but am analyzing this 3 story wood structure and could see that it probably should have been constructed of 2x6 instead of the 2x4's.
