    Weld repairs to A105 Flange

Steam leaks on pipe flanges is a common problem at our facility. Often the leaks can only be addressed during an annual maintenance outage. Usually by that time the flange face has been "cut" by the steam. We have repaired these defects by mechanical removal (grinding, PT the excavation...

    ASME PCC-2

Hi, I would like to use ASME PCC-2 as a repair guideline for B31.1 piping systems. However I cannot find a reference to it in B31.1. It is not listed as an adopted standard in my jusrisdiction (British Columbia, Canada). Does that mean I can't use it?

PWHT Requirements for P-No. 4 Material

    Thank you for the help.

PWHT Requirements for P-No. 4 Material

What governs PWHT requirements for P-No. 4 Materials? We are replacing flanges and a section of pipe on a 10" diameter steam line. The pipe is Sch 40 (0.365" wall) A335 P11 (P-No. 4 material). The piping is Non Boiler External Piping B31.1. However our weld procedure states that any pipe...

Trouble interpreting ASME Sec IX QW-200.4

Trouble interpreting ASME Sec IX QW-200.4 I want to make sure I understand this paragraph properly. I have an approved WPS for GTAW of SS piping and a WPS for SMAW of SS piping. If I wanted to produce a SS weld with GTAW root and SMAW hot pass/fill and cap I can do so using a combination of...

    Weld Repair in HAZ

I have a set of 10" WNRF 600# flanges on an superheated steam line (765 deg F service temp) that need to be replaced The existing pipe is A335 Gr. P1 Sch 40 (P No. 3, 1/2Mo, no Chrome). The flanges are A182 F11 (P No. 4, 1-1/4Cr, 1/2Mo). There was no PWHT on the original welds nor do we plan...

    B31.3 Allowable Porosity

I found the answer to my question - after obtaining a version of B31.3 more current than my 1993 copy. Note 5 has been removed, surface porosity is not allowed.

    B31.3 Allowable Porosity

I'm confused over the allowable surface porosity for girth welds in all fluid services. Table 341.3.2A states that the extent of imperfection allowed is zero, however it also refers to Note 5 (These imperfections are evaluated for welds less than or equal to 3/16" in nominal thickness). Does...

Pressure Gauge for B31.1 Hydro Test

I should have been more specific - we are installing Non Boiler External Piping manufactured to B31.1.

Pressure Gauge for B31.1 Hydro Test

I'm confused over the requirements for pressure gauges that are to be used for hydrotesting pressure piping manufactured to either B31.1 or B31.3. Neither B31.1 or B31.3 state any requirements for gauge calibration or gauge ranges (at least that I can find, maybe I'm wrong). Nor can I find...

Thanks for your responses, much appreciated.

    Welder Qualification

    But ER70S is a F6 material.

    Welder Qualification

Why not? (Assuming Procedure 3 has a valid PQR) Procedure 2 qualifies him to weld any P1 thru P11 material using F6 filler with GTAW Procedure 1 qualifies him to weld any P1 thru P11 material using F4 filler with SMAW

    Welder Qualification

If a welder is qualified to: Procedure 1 SMAW P1 to P1 E6010 root, E7018 fill and cap Procedure 2 GTAW P8 to P8 ER316L filler Would that automatically qualify him for Procedure 3 GTAW/SMAW P1 to P1 ER70S root, E7018 fill and cap

API 653 Repiar of Caustic Tank

We are replacing a manway insert on a 40 year old carbon steel API 650 storage tank. The tank has been used as a White Liquor (Caustic) Storage tank. I'm concerned the inner shell to insert weld will fail due to caustic embrittlement of the shell material. Any suggestions as how to avoid this?
