if you select the parts you wish to Demote followed by Tab, Inventor will open the an assembly window.
btw i made a recent switch from SW to Inventor ( for work reasons, and altough at first i was not convinced, i have come to really appreciate Inventor.

I regularly import models (igs & step ) in Ansys Workbench, and seldome encounter problems.
Is this the first time ur trying to import files into ansys?
