    LH Joist minimum shear stength

I have seen references stating the minimum shear strength of a K-series joist is 25% of the end reaction. Where is this stated in SJI specs? Is it the same for LH series? Thanks for the help

Building steel girder system structure determinate/stable?

No, not home work! Its a real building, a tilt up warehouse/office. I first designed it as true Gerber style, like in the steel book (pg 2-311 in the green book). Then it was explained to me the style on my attached drawing would be easier to erect, since with the drop in links in the steel...

Fall protection proprietary system anchorage to metal roof deck

Who has experience with the anchorage of a fall protection proprietary system to metal roof deck? I am working with a manufacturer, Guardian, with their system "XS Horizontal Lifeline system". I was provided the design load by their engineers. The load is 3,600 lbs applied horizontally to the...

Stair stringer with multiple flights and landings

Thanks to all that responded to the original thread. We decided to add hanger supports at the middle landing to the roof in order to squash any concerns about vibration.

Stair stringer with multiple flights and landings

Not concerned about vibration so much. The steps and landings are concrete filled pans, which should dampen vibration. Static deflection is ok, about L/400.

Stair stringer with multiple flights and landings

I have an architecturally driven stair stringer design challenge. The stringer spans 2 flights of stairs and 3 landings, see attached sketch. As such, there are 4 "kinks" in the beam. I know that the beam has to be designed for the global moment WL*L/8, with full strength welds at the kinks to...

    Composite metal deck and slab

Is WWF required/needed for temp and shrinkage in an elevated slab designed using composite deck? It is not needed for carrying load for the values in the deck manufacturers tables for composite deck (at least for Vulcraft). My situation is 1.5VL20, 5" overall tk. Thanks for the help.

Pre-Engineered Bldg Inspection - Bearing required for columns

Unless you ran an analysis, I believe you have to assume the full base plate area is required for bearing. There is no rule of thumb otherwise that I know of. I want to point out too that the decision whether or not to call for grout under column base plates is completly up to the foundation...

ASCE 7-05 Wind analysis METHOD 2 program recommendation

I'm looking for a recommendation for a stand alone program that generates wind loads per ASCE 7-05 METHOD 2 (not method 1, simplified). The Enercalc program I have only does method 1. It doesn't need to be freeware, just good.

cut opening in exist. flat slab elevated floor

msquared48, BAretired, frv, lion06, hokie66 - Thanks for the input. The slab is not PT. The area encompassed by the opening will be a clear opening and will not deliver any load to the opening edges. The remaining area outside the opening will not have any unusual loadings.Yes, I do have the...

Owner wants to cut 8' x 8' opening in 10.5" tk exist. flat slab elevated floor. It occurs within intersection of the middle strips. Bays are 25' x 20'. As far as design aids, all I have been able to find are articles that are too general in nature. Yes, I know reinforcing will be required. I...
