    Flare bevel size

Does the size of a flare bevel weld have to be 5/8 times the thickness of the bent plate? If a smaller weld is required per calcs can the weld size be smaller. I am concerned about the heat a bigger weld will generate as the plate I need to attach is only 3/8" thick and the weld size comes out...

Approved Anchors cracked conrete for suspended ceiling in PT slab

Can anyone suggest an anchor that has an ICC approval for cracked concrete with maximum 3/4" embedment to resist seismic load. This is regarding anchorage for seismic bracing in a PT slab for 4psf of suspended ceiling. Using an X-ray to miss the tendons to hang a ceiling ( 8' o.c ea way)- is an...

Allowable deflection for horizontal aluminum Mullion

Does anyone know what is the delfection limit for deadload( gravity only) for the horizontal members in aluminum curtainwalls or storefront. I have been using L/175, but some manufacturers use min of L/360 or 1/8". Where does the 1/8" limit come form. Is it in the code? Thnaks, Sutki

Steel Studs Joist blocking supporting loading bearing wall

The joist are C- sections back to back and they are web stiffners so the web crippling has been accounted for. My question is if the code recommends blocking for the twisting of the joist under gravity load.

Steel Studs Joist blocking supporting loading bearing wall

I also want to add, whether the typical joist blocking loacted @ 1/4 of joist span is adequate or if the solid blocking has to be right under the load bearing wall.

Steel Studs Joist blocking supporting loading bearing wall

Can anyone tell me the code provisions for required steel stud joist blocking under a load bearing steel stud wall. Does the code address this issue? Are there any recomendations? My basic concern is if it has to be solid blocking under the wall.

    Effective wind area ASCE-7-05

Hello, If I have a continuous member (say 5 span) would I use the centre to centre of supports(individual spans) to calculate the effective area for windload calculations or would I use the entire length of the continuous member (5 spans) It is definitely conservative to use individual span but...

    ASCE 12.7.3 structural modeling

Hello, I have a five storey building that includes 2 stories of underground parking. It has type 1b and type 4 irregularity per table 12.3-1. My lateral system is concrete shear wall and rigid conc. diaphragm. As per Cl 17.3.2 a 3D modelling is required. Could anyone suggest a suitable 3D...

Torsional constant for Complex Mullion sections

The best way to verify is to use a steel handbook. The handbook lists the torsional properties for a variety of sections. That is how I would go about doing it. I did download the program but one problem i am encountering is that almost all of the Aluminum sections for mullions I deal with are...

Torsional constant for Complex Mullion sections

I am looking for an efficient and quick way to calculate torsional constant,J for mullion sections which are unique are highly complex (http://www.vistawall.com./details/fastnav/fastnav_frames.htm u can download from this website. I am dealing with a variety of sections. It is time consuming...

Can you calculate torsional constant in AutoCad?

I dont think torsional constant can replace polar moment of inertia. even for simple rectangular tube the difference is in the magnitude of 400%. I am however not familiar with solids.

    Mullions Section properties

Hello All, Thanks for your replies. I guess phrased my question incorrectly. I know how to calculate the properties of a section. What I am looking for is an efficient and quick way to calculate J. The mullion sections are highly complex...
