API 650 Bottom Plate Layout Four-Plate Joint?

You know, it took me a minute to wrap my head around this, but I agree. I wish that API 650 were a bit more clear about this case, since the fabricator is going to say this verbiage is not definitive. Thanks for the response!

API 650 Bottom Plate Layout Four-Plate Joint?

In an API 650 tank with butt-welded bottom plates, is there anything in API 650 prohibiting four-plate bottom joints, where the four corners of 4 plates all meet in an X shape? API 650 5.1.5.5 "Butt-Welded Bottom Joints" states "Three-plate joints in the tank bottom shall be at least 300 mm (12...

Question about weld metal strength for a lower material strength nozzle in a high strength shell

A client is welding a small solid alloy (nickel 200 N02200) nozzle with an allowable stress of 18.6 ksi into a SA516-70 (allowable stress 20ksi) shell. The nozzle is being inserted into to the shell with a full penetration weld and fillet, such as UW-16.1 (c) (d) or (e). The filler metal being...

Section IX PQR / WPS question

I find Section IX so confusing! Help me out here. Does an essential variable (say decrease of preheat > 100) refer to WPS preheat range being not more than 100 degrees less than the PQR, or the PQR actual preheat used being not more than 100 degrees less than the WPS range, or a production...

Section IX PQR / WPS question

If a test specimen for a PQR is welded (SMAW) without preheat, and passes its required tests, may a WPS be written based on that PQR that does require preheat(an essential variable)? Chapter and verse from Section IX would be appreciated.

    Mitered Pipe in S8D1?

I'm designing a nozzle which requires a 45° mitered bend between the nozzle neck and the flange of the nozzle, so within the scope of Div 1 per U-1(e)(1)(c).

    Mitered Pipe in S8D1?

Pretty simple question, are mitered pipe bends allowed in ASME Section VIII Div. 1? I have a 30" nozzle which the buyer would like to have a mitered 45° joint in. After scouring code and the internet, I'm not seeing anything either allowing or prohibiting their use in Section VIII Div 1...

    Pressure Vessel Inspector Career

If you want to be an API-510 inspector working the petrochemical inspection circuit, it seems to be one of those industries that you have to know someone to get into. You need to work in the industry for a certain amount of time in order to take the test to get certified. You usually need to be...

    Dual Rating and PSVs

We occasionally run into equipment that was originally stamped at two or more coincident MAWP/MAWTs. For instance, an ASME Section VIII Div 2 vessel was originally rated and stamped (on the nameplate and data report) for 1500 psi @ 100 °F and 1000 psi @ 700 °F. How does ASME (or any other...

ASME Code VIII vs. API 650/620

weldtek, Im sure you, as have many of us, have seen horribly constructed ASME pressure vessels and very well constructed API tanks. Is an average ASME pressure vessel without any additional inspection usually higher quality construction than an API tank with the same inspection? Probably so...

    Minimum Nozzle Weld Size

This seems to be a subject that everyone has their own opinion on how to interpret the intent of code for. I personally believe that figure UW-16.1 (h) is a good indicator that the intent of code is that full penetration nozzle neck to shell welds that have internal projection have a minimum...

    Jacket Design Temperature

It will likely be ok in that service, but in order to know for sure (for safety concerns) you would have to rerun mechanical integrity calcs on it.

Rehydro test due to clip welding after PWHT

A hydrotest is a leak test primarily for welds. As long as your clip is not being installed over an existing through wall weld (such as a circ or long seam) then a hydrotest would not really do anything for you. I would guess you could probably get the AI to buy off on not rehydrotesting.
