    Motorcycle steering

Hanging off can't affect lateral load. That is purely mass and angular velocity. It only affects how far up the side of the tyre the load acts.

    Motorcycle steering

OK, so I was wrong...weight shift can make it turn .. depending on the geometry :-) .

    Flywheel structural questions

Philosophical, and pertinent. It was with this consideration, that one of my earlier posts compared the device to a fragmentation grenade, though even "anti-tank-mine" may be underestimating the damage wrought by such a device. Partly due to the responses in this forum, safe distribution...

    Flywheel structural questions

To sreid, Thanks for the pointer, I'll have a look. To ccfowler, Can you elaborate of the failure you experienced...how big was the wheel, how fast, what failed etc ?. How much TNT would contain/release 1GJ !.

    Flywheel structural questions

I stand, or sit, forwarned. We do have an experienced mechanical engineer, and an engineering comapny involved in this as consultants. They(in South Africa) will be dealing with that side of the project. I'm sorry to hear of your direct involvement with failures. Hopefully, due in part to...

    Flywheel structural questions

I AM well aware of the frightening amount of energy stored( 1GJ ?) in a/this flywheel, so 1) I intend to test to destruction, at least one...in a container, in the sea !. 2) The unit will be limited to less than half the failure speed, or 10k rpm..whichever is lower. 3) The unit, in use, will be...

    Motorcycle steering

I like the term "Ice cream cruisers"...someone on of our TV chatshows said... a Triumph(referring to the old Company..before the name was revived) is a motorcycle...a Harley is a fashion accessory. I wouldn't go QUITE that far, but I never had the desire to own a Harley. I had wanted a Pantah...

    Motorcycle steering

Like a magazine report years ago, comparing a Guzzi with a big honda..both handled like they were on rails....the difference was that the rails the Guzzi was on went round the bends...the honda's ones were dead straight, regardless :-) . I think Choppers are for long straight roads !. S.

    Motorcycle steering

I think I'd better keep quiet about my opinion of choppers !. It would seem taht well balanced bikes would be largely imune to weight-shift alone. No offence intended to vintage machines. I CAN get my Duc to turn, but only with a series of nudges...just leaning out has almost no effect, as...

    Motorcycle steering

Does it realy work, other than for a few yards ?. Could you actually negotiate a bend like that ?. I find that I just get a very brief wiggle('81 Duc Pantah), but as you say...pinky against the bars is plenty !. Maybe I should have said a WIDE, straight, empty road.

    Flywheel structural questions

Help please... I am designing a flywheel energy storage system, and need to know... how to calculate the tension in a solid ring when it is spinning. Think of it as a segmented flywheel...what tension would a band round the outside have to deal with ? assume 1 tonne, with effective diameter of...

    Motorcycle steering

I'm sure this has been discussed before It is all down to the effective combined forces of gravity, and centrifugal force caused by turning, and it's position relative to the tyre contact points. Try 2 experiments....on a straight, empty road. Try to steer by weight shift only..it doesn't...

    SAW resonator/oscillator

Can anyone advise me on the best oscillator circuit to use with a 2-port SAW resonator ?. TIA Shane

    AC - DC controller/psu chip

    Dang...almost !. I need 24V...or 400mA@12V. Maybe still workable...thanks sreid

    AC - DC controller/psu chip

I don't want to use bricks, because my solution will be ceiling mounted, maybe inside the lamp (LEDarray) fitting it'self
