Thanks for the recommendations. However, The kind of valve I'm thinking about is more of a cycle stop valve with electrical control of the pump... Or am I dreaming? I've been told that such a valve exists. I'm looking for the specific name.

I've got water hammer from a 5 HP well pump going uphill against a 250 psi head into open tanks. Breaking too much PVC piping. I can't remember the name of this valve. When a pump starts this valve deadheads the pump and opens slowly. When the pump is shut off this valve first slowly gags...
