nuclear density gauges are not accurate

I like to add my two cents. I may not have much experience as the others, (11 years), but I agree that you should have more than one way to prove the soil is compacted. I prefer to us the proof roll over the nuke gauge if at all possible. I know engineers like numebrs because they are defendable...

    Shear Strength Testing

Direct Simple Shear (DSS) combines the direct shear test with the pore pressure measurments of the triaxial and allows the soil to shear along the weakest plane. It is not forced like the direct shear. The DSS sample is placed in a membrane (like and triaxial) but is shear like a direct shear...

    Chloride ion ranges in concrete

Does anybody know where I can find information about ranges of Chloride in Concrete? I am looking for nominal ranges to compare test results to. Thanks

How is nitrogen content measured in soil?

Tango Charlie I was thinking you could try HACH field Equipment to test for nitrogen in field. It may be just an indicator, but maybe enough for you. Here is the link...

    ASTM D2488

Tank you for your help mscuoq and fatdad. I should have clarified things. that samples had been previously described in the field. Because of the way the work plan was written the engineer insisted that all soils be identified by ASTM D2488. So we used the photos as another tool in helping ID...

    ASTM D2488

Can you identify a soil from a picture by ASTM D 2488? And if so where does it state it in the Spec. I have tried looking for it and can not seem to find any.

How is nitrogen content measured in soil?

TangoCharlie, In the US most labs follow SW-846. I have attached a link to the nitrate nitrite test for you to see how it is run. I hope this helps: Nitrate: http://www.epa.gov/SW-846/pdfs/9210a.pdf Nitrite: http://www.epa.gov/SW-846/pdfs/9216.pdf

How is nitrogen content measured in soil?

I am not sure if it is possible in the field, but any environemental lab can measure the nitrite and nitrate (NO2 and NO3) in the soil. That is a realatively inexpensive test.

    Geotechnical Lab Database

We are running QEST LIM system. It is an ISO compliant Database. Give them a try.

    Direct Shear

Does anybody know where I can obtain a used direct shear machine?

    Soil Cement Compaction

Have you tried taking drive cylinders to see a field density? This may not be possible depending on the max aggregate size. Was there any proctor taken and was it checked for errors? Did you try doing a test strip with the nuclear gauge to see if you can come up consistent dendisties? Are you...

    Consolidation Test

zaqqaz, If you have access to ASTM D4186 V.04.09 please read. The biggest advantage to the CRS test compared to the incremental is speed. With a CRS test a sample can be completed in as little as two (2) days sometimes sooner. The biggest limiting factor is the permeability of the soil. YOU...

Determining adequate depth of soil boring

Another good idea will be to do a preliminary site geology prior to proposal writing. This will help determine cost and boring depth along with anticipated settlement and loads. Taking 15 to 30 minutes can save a lot of headaches in the long run.

    Hyrdaulic Conductivity in Shelby Tube.

Thanks to everybody for all the input. This is for an environmental analysis for potential flow of contaminant. I agree with you that the infield test would be best. I have also tried to explain these points to my client and they still do not understand that to run a test from a shelby tube that...

    Hyrdaulic Conductivity in Shelby Tube.

The problem is that the sample is fine to coarse sand. Even when you extrude the sample directly into a membrane the sample tends to fall out and become even more disturbed. By the way the tube is extremely damaged and I only have a 6 inch section to work with.
