I have a requirement to vacuum heat treat a material. Since this is a casting with at least 0.100" of material removal before finished dimensions is it ok to heat treat in an inert atmosphere?
I am going to run a test that references an old specification calling out a method called a back modulus. If possible, I would like a history lesson on the reason for the unloading and reloading. I understand they are trying provide a method to be used when a material does not exhibit a well...
There is no real correlation that I am aware of. As OGmetengr stated the relationship between hardness and impact strength for a given material is the obvious one, typically the harder the material is the more brittle it is.
The only sub-size CVN specs that I have seen are where someone has...
I realize that. That is the basis for the training that I had mentioned.
I know I can create it in a conventional furnace, i have been successful at that already. This time I am trying to create a very precise amount that is uniform in depth and I was wondering if anyone has had success...

I stumbled upon this thread today and was wondering if anyone else has had success with the creation of Alloy Depletion.
We are going to use this as training material and would like to create a fairly uniform layer of Alloy Depletion on 718 material.
We have both vacuum...
I am looking for a supplier for either of these materials. 3/4", and 1.2" diameter bar.
The quantities I want are small probably 1 10' bar or so of each. Does anyone know of a supplier for these small quantities?
I'v always been told that when testing cast to size magnesium tensile specimens the casting "skin" should be left on. With some specifications there are different requirements for cast to size vs machined from casting specimens.
Does anyone know of any articles that discuss this?
Thank You
I'm looking to inspect some parts for cracks to internal threads. The parts in question are 15-5PH H1025. The threads are 1-14-2A x 2" deep. The part is about 2.375" outside diameter by 3" long.
We called a local Xray house and the tech support person said the wall thickness (approx 0.670")...
We are machining a part out 17-4PH. The bar stock is annealed 5.25"dia x 12" long. We will be machining a section to approx 4.5" outside diameter X 5" long with an internal 3.75-12 thread (4.5" deep). The application requires we restrict rotation so the 4" diameter internally threaded section...
I'm looking for articles/papers on retained autenite in 17-7PH SS. Particularly interested in articles/papers contianing photos of evidence in the microstructure.
Thanks
We have some ZE41A magnesium to machine.
All of the articles on the subject that I have read are generic and do not specify the alloy when discussing special handling requirements. Does anyone know the particulars of this alloy? Chemistry requirements are 94% Magnesium.
Thanks
Maraging steels are magnetic. The only way I know of to get that high of a hardness out of an austenitic stainless is to cold work it. BTW this may also make it slightly magnetic.
I need a source for some high temperature alloy bar stock.
The size is 2" diameter by 18" long bar stock.
I only need 2 pcs however.
The materials would be Udimet 700 or 713C.
Does anyone know of a supplier who would carry this material but also deals in these small quantities?
Thanks
I need to mark parts that are going to be heat treated. The parts may be various alloys. Some high temp materials(not much oxidation)and some that will develop significant scale. The marking is mainly for identification purposes but somtimes it is used to help us find certain indications that...
