Does anybody have any experience of using proprietary concretes for structural or non structural purposes?
We use CESWI as the basis of our specification, which refers to the standard cement blends (OPC, CEM I, CEM II etc.), typically used in a designed or designated mix.
We've been looking...
Thanks for replying BA. I'm trying to avoid a piled solution, mainly because of access problems (everything has to cme through a gate at the side of the house), and frankly I'm trying to keep the cost down as well. I thought the bearing pressures would be so low under the raft that I may not...
I am looking to design a single story extention (approx 3m x 4.5m) on the back of my house and wanted a bit of guidence from those of you who have done this sort of thing before (preferably in the UK).
My background is mainly in bridge design working for large consultants, so typically will have...
Thanks Qshake,
Precast panels with an in-situ topping have been proposed, so this sounds like a pretty standard case. We have a concrete barrier/parapet/railing on the stringcourse/cantilever/overhang, so I guess this will govern the design.

Hi,
I'm looking at designing the deck slab for a fairly routine, simply supported, multigirder bridge deck.
Being from the UK, I have not used AASHTO before and have a quick question regarding the anaysis.
Ordinarily, I would look at the global effects of differential deflection of the beams...
I've had a request from a fabricator to include some ties between pairs of braced girders as they are concerned about tolerances on straighness which could affect the placing of the permanent formwork panels.
They reference table 8 in 5400-6, but I'm having trouble determining the tolerances...
I am in the process of preparing a departure for the use of resin fixed reinforcement. I have been predominately looking at Hilti HIT-RE-500 system.
The job involves breaking out the back face of a small wingwall, resin fixing some bars into the abutment, then recasting the back of the wingwall...
Anyone have any experiance designing resin fixed bars using Hilti HIT-HY-150 system or Hilti HIT-RE-500 system with the Hilti Fastening Technology Manual?
I have a few queries if anybody has.
Thanks for your response Valleyboy. First of all, let me clear up that I wasn't being derogatory about buildings by suggesting that designs were simpler. What I meant was that from speaking to engineers that have done both there is a lot more emphasis on programme in the buildings sector. With...
Do they actually call it a Royale in France? It's still a quarter pounder in England.
Apparently they're going to stop selling beer in pints over here as well, so that we're in line with the rest of Europe.
Anyway, I feel we've digressed...
I might just jack bridges in and be a team leader at...
Has anyone on here made the switch from being a Highway Structures (ie Bridges) Engineer to a Building Structures Engineer?
It's something I'm considering at the moment, and wanted to get an idea of the differences between the two and how easy it is to switch.
I have about 5 years...
Well I wanted to avoid reconstructing the whole wingwall if possible, so we tried a few different methods to try to get a favourable result. This might not sound like the correct way to go about things, but it was a case of knowing that this huge lump of concrete wasn't going to go anywhere, but...
