Another thing that has worked occasionally is to modify the extrude direction when making the solid from the surface. Instead of extruding in the Z direction, try extruding normal to the surface.
I also use Through Curve Meshes and have encountered the same message. Likewise, my fix was also to offset a surface or if creating an extrusion from the surface, change the start from 0.0000 to -0.0005. That usually works.

Did you try the "High Quality Image" under the view/visualization pulldown?
There is a "Photo-Realistic" method selectable which I've used. Not bad results and doesn't take too long.
There are also some "Ray Tracing" methods available.
