Analyzing and code checking a pre-engineered metal building for new rooftop RTU loading

Like others say, I would not put extra load on the existing structure. Design an independent frame to take care of the superimposed RTUs. I use this approach not only with PEMBs, but any existing structure unless it is clearly overdesigned.

    Geological Map for Texas

Hello: Can anybody share a link to a geological map to find areas in central Texas where potentially expansive soils exist. Thanks a lot. RB

    Expansive Soils List

Hello. I am looking for a list of expansive soils. Can someone share a link. I have identified the soil as UtD per USDA, I would like to know more types to be aware of. This is for personal reference. Thanks!

British UB vs US W Shapes

Greetings. I am going over a nice brit document about portal frame plastic design but is in metric. I was wondering if anyone has come across a table with equivalencies for British UB shapes vs US W wide flange shapes. Any leads will be appreciated. Happy thanksgiving. Rare

    Cooling Load Calculator for RTU

@BronYAur Thanks for your feedback. In fact I have experience designing systems for residential, restaurants (hoods type I and II) and commercial projects (more like strip malls) using ASHRAE guidelines. As you mentioned, a church with an outdated system needs to account for people, assuming...

Flitch Beam Splice at Wall Bearing

Hi. Am designing a Flitch beam with (3) 2x12's and two steel plates 8"x5'-0"x1/4" at the heAder bearing location for a garage opening that was increased from 16' to 17'. I determined the moment and distributed the stresses to wood and steel by their stifness ratios. Question I have is how...

    Large Unreinforced Stone Beams

BigMig: have you looked into the possibility to do a continuous longitudinal cut that allows the embedment of a steel beam. Im sure a good mason can do slit the baby.it might even be a vertical plate with a bottom flange or with no flange but drilled through bars staggered for a composite...

Floor Framing Systems on Concrete Drilled Piers

Hello: Am designing a 5000 sf home in NW Dallas metroplex. Soil turned out to be expansive from soil report. Geotech recommended raised concrete slab on piers. Am new to drilled piers but upon looking at some projects that I have seen in the past I was wondering why it has to be a raised...

    Pile design requirement

Hello all: For curiosity, what soil bearing capacity do you guys use as a benchmark for the need of piles in highly cohesive soil. Geotech is preparing soil report but I was wondering how does this play out when IBC allows for footing design assuming a 1500 psf without a soil report. This is...

    Garage Build Question

I have dealt with this situation before. While a thickened slab is typically sufficient from structural standpoint, code establishes that footings have to go below frost line. So yes, I would advise you to specify a footing to go to that depth otherwise plan examiner will likely reject it and...
