    Asymmetric intakes - damage engine?

They may look unequal lengths but are in fact compensated for within the cylinder head casting and inlet tracts.

    btu's per hp

A rough estimation for brake specific horspower per imperial gallon is 45hp/gallon/hour

    Pre-Ignition vs. Detonation

During my career I have seen many examples of holed pistons due to insipient detonation as opposed to the short lived temporary transient form brought about by being in the wrong gear, poor batch of fuel from the supermarket etc.The range of effects from good old fashioned detonation/knocking can...

Why no foil bearing turbos yet?

It is important to note that manufacturers are there to make profit for their shareholders not to speculate in technology for the sake of it. If something has benefits that are worthwhile eg cheaper, lighter, faster etc then they will rise to the pile and be selected for production. If something...

    Pre-Ignition vs. Detonation

I had thought that this one was already done to death, detonation is a condition due to the end gas within the combustion chamber being spontaneously ignited by the heat generated by the advancing flame front, normal combustion ceases and an explosion occurs.Detonation is also referred to as knock...

Estimation of Center of gravity of a CRANKSHAFT

On a single cylinder engine yes but with multiples you would need to be able to assign mass to the individual pins and webs, difficult on a straight six?

Why no foil bearing turbos yet?

Peter 7307 has succinctly covered all aspects of introducing new technology. Too often these days new ideas are introduced that have no real advantage over their predecessors other than that they are new.I personally welcome new, useful and cost effective improvements providing they do what is...

Estimation of Center of gravity of a CRANKSHAFT

Dynamic balancing is the only real way to guarantee success

Why no foil bearing turbos yet?

You're dead right why bother to experiment with high tech if low tech works ok,all you need is an oil pipe and a drain for the turbo how difficult is that. Besides the manufacturer can design it and make it and sell it just so Joe Public can abuse it and wreck it!

    Dry sump tank design

Over here we use pas pumps drawing oil from the base of the sump, float controlled anti aeration valves to allow only oil to return to the oil tank,a cooler & filter is also incorporated into the supply pipe to keep the oil cool & clean. Perforated metal windage trays are also added to assist...

    Turbo Diesel instant boost

Leyland 350,600 & some versions of 680, Bedford 300/330 Ford Trader 4 & 6 cyl models, Some Perkins models too. Admittedly these are late 50's early 60s.

    Turbo Diesel instant boost

The toyota system uses a butterfly controlled by a stepper motor controlled by ecu, designed for emissions rather than throttling in the conventional sense. In my earlier life I worked extensively on trucks & coaches and pnuematic governors were common as indeed was a throttle set up to allow...

    Turbo Diesel instant boost

Toyoytas use throttle butterflies to this date

    Turbo Diesel instant boost

Essentially, on a N/A engine the volumetric efficiency remains fairly constant from idle to max governed speed eg approx 85-90%, however, in a turbo application this can be upto 150% and sometimes even greater dependant on design and application. As previously mentioned a diesel runs without air...

    Methanol fuel safety?

I notice you still intend to use methanol as a secondary fuel, you really won't need it for moderate output as the oxygen & hydrogen content in the water will be sufficient the greatest advantage will be the internal cooling effect and increased density. Hope you don't mind me saying
