    Retention Knob pull pressure

We are trying to decide what the best (retention knob) pull stud pressure would be on a CAT-50 holder for a 30hp CNC Machine. The current machine spindle recommends 4500lbs. but we are contemplating designing new spindles with rates as high as 8-10,000 lbs. to solve some taper wear issues?

    Pibomulti angle heads

THANKS for the great feedback! What is your machine taper (HSK-63, CAT40, CAT50 etc.)? Which units did you use? What types/sizes of cutting tools? Have you any other experience with right angle heads before this (Koma, Alberti, Big Kaiser, Benz etc.)?

    Pibomulti angle heads

Looking for a reference from someone that has used Pibomulti right angle head attachments. Any feedback?

    Torque specs-dry vs oil

Thanks for all the great input! When tightening the pull stud it distorts the taper on the holder, the tighter you go, the worst it gets. Yet, you must torque to 150 ftlb. to keep from coming loose. Only option is to tighten to spec and use a Loctite 371 or 377 to keep it from loosening. If...

    Torque specs-dry vs oil

JJ, My application is on a pull stud on a CNC machine holder, we have found that it takes about 150 ft. lbs. to keep the oily stud from coming loose however, the manufactures spec is 110 ft.lbs. max., I don't know if that is dry or wet. If we torque to full spec, it will distort the machine...

    Torque specs-dry vs oil

Sorry NickE, I see automotive and manufacturing as different disciplines however, I thought changing the senario to suit the discipline was ok.

    Torque Spec-dry vs oil

I have a 1"-8 thread with a 110 ft.lbs. max. torque spec. This seems quite sufficient if the threads were always dry. However, between the the application is contantly contaminated by oil, in takes about 150 ft.lbs. to get the same results, a formula or lab test backed data sheet would be nice...

    Cat-50 Holder run-out

The 'taper checker' is strictly for checking the concentricity of the taper, it locates on rollers at 11 & 1 o'clock, high and low and in the center on the opposite side dead inbetween the high and low rollers. It has indicators at the above and below, inline with single roller. It comes with a...

    Cat-50 Holder run-out

Thanks for the great links! We have a company that reginds our spindles, my search is for re-justifying the holder tapers. Or maybe finding others with SNK spindle issues. Thanks for your input!

    Cat-50 Holder run-out

We have some 50-taper machines (SNK-machines with in-spec 3500lbs. of pull pressure) that have habitually collected pitting and wear on the holder taper. It has resulted in regular spindle taper regrinding. We have been recently evaluating the run-out condition of our holders with a proper...

    Powdered Metal vs HssCo

Thanks for the input guys! We are a manufacturer that machines alot of 15-5SS and have switched to PM cutters because they do perform better. We like to justify purchases by gathering solid technical data for making decisions not sales claims so I am trying to compare HSSCo vs PM vs PMCo...
