    Tolerance

you were shipped the wrong bolts. there is a very very small plus/minus on diameter which would depend on thread grade but I can assure you the tolerance is nowhere near 1/8". threaded fasteners are generally made to pretty precise tolerances, nut threads would certainly never fit otherwise. the...

    Welds sweating

I'm just a lowly BSME (not a PHD or anything so I'm sure someone will find fault in my theory here) just using common sense I think you are seeing a thermal conductivity issue. I don't think this has anything to do with the welds exactly but rather with the fact that the weld creates a thicker...

    Carbon Equivalence Formula

this is the standard CE formula that I have seen used C + Mn/6 + Cu/40 + Ni/20 + Cr/10 + Mo/50 + V/10 I've never seen Si included in there. I believe the intent is just to account for trace ammounts of effective carbon present as result of the additional alloying elements. This is important to...

Speeding up the oxidation of COR-TEN

I have heard of using a salt water wash to accelerate the natural patina formation on weathering steels. Pre-fabricated bridge manufacturers typically employ this method strictly for aesthetic purposes to provide a uniform appearance on finished material prior to shipment. I am not aware of any...

    Costs of Various Metals

Keep in mind commodity prices are not going to be indicative of mill or "finished" prices for rolled structural shapes which I assume your looking for by the way you worded your question..."different metals such as steels, Al etc for variety of shapes and sizes" Even price trends in commoditiy...

    Galvanized anchor bolts

embrittlement is a concern when galvanizing A490 bolts. A490 is meant to be used in a bare or painted condition. A325, A307, F1554 etc can all be HDG no problem. If setting in concrete you are much better off with galvnanized bolts rahter than bare anyway.

DOT's requiring PE stamps on Shop Drawings

I agree with alot of the responses here relating to stamping design-build work or stamping drawings which may be partially based on standard DOT details and partially based on site-specific design by contractor or fabricator. I completely agree with the statement about economy of items such as...
