Using a make datum for the reference worked.
I was picking the protrusion from the screen for the pattern command when I should have been picking the group from the model tree. <Slapping myself on the forehead>

Yes I have thought of that. It would require a "base" extrusion and then other sketches referenced only to that extrusion (normal to the axis of rotation)that wittle away to form the exact profile and then pattern the whole group, that just seems more complicated than it...

You are probably trying to reference geometry that was created after the sketch that you are re-defining was created. One way to avoid this is to "roll back" the model so that the "insertion point" is right after the sketch that your re-defining, this will remove features...
