As an engineer, I avoid management consultants, IT /change management consultants and accountants. and I know why I used to be one of them for a while. What a game.
It seems to me the weaker professional they are the quicker they make it to the above.
I remember many years ago a comment made by my young boss:

Being an employee in AU is better than in US (my view) more job security, less stress a better lifestyle all around.( education, medical etc .( With kids I would prefer AU)(Without kids and single: US - in places like south beach or daytona beach....hihihihih)

the typical way I saw in many american businesses is :
keep as many staff on the cheapest rate possible and use overtime.
cheap staff is easy to downsize or recruit ( flexible workforce)
investing in capital requires long term commitments that reduces flexibility
