Foundation Design for 10'D Asphalt Tank

Our typical foundation design for small asphalt (or other elevated temp. products) is simply a raised concrete slab with a sheet of asphalt impregnated fiberboard between the slab and the tank bottom. On a recent project, on of the other engineers in our office designed in (4) radially spaced 1...

Zinc plated hardware against stainless steel

Are there any concerns with using zinc plated hardware against 316 L stainless steel? The application is a steam ejector. I'm not a metallurgy person so please advise if you need additional information to be able to answer the question.

    Groundwater under building foundation

Thanks cvg. You have stated the problem that I should have more clearly mentioned. How do you install a slotted drain pipe using directional drilling without clogging the slots/pores?

    Groundwater under building foundation

To comment on and/or answer a few of the questions above: The building is most definitely heaving; we have seen movements of 4-6 inches in some parts of the building. Other areas have experienced some settlement but nowhere near the magnitude of the heaving seen in other areas. The expansive...

    Groundwater under building foundation

We are confident that the source of the water (maybe I shouldn't have called it groundwater?) was from the irrigation problems and the sewer line breaks. These sources have now been removed. I assume that after some time the water levels will eventually subside, but it may take years due to...

    Groundwater under building foundation

Thanks for the response, but most of the movement has been from heaving and not settlement. The water levels were not constant until after the sewer line breaks were repaired. The water fluctuated pretty drastically before the breaks were repaired.

    Groundwater under building foundation

The building in question is a manufacturing facility approx. 400'L x 200'W. The building was constructed on select fill over expansive clay; the select fill ranges from 7' to 14' thick. Even with the select fill thickness, the building has suffered substantial foundation damage due to swelling...

Asphalt Truck Loading - Vapor Removal

Operators loading hot asphalt into tanker trucks are often exposed to a flood of vapors above the truck dome. Most terminals/asphalt plants utilize some type of exhaust system to remove these vapors. Systems can consists of a simple fan to blow the vapors away or piping, a mist eliminator, and...

Long Term Outdoor Storage for Heat Exchangers

Thanks for all the feedback. We have elected to prime coat the external of all exchangers and maintain a nitrogen purge for the duration of the storage period. Thanks again.

Long Term Outdoor Storage for Heat Exchangers

I've got 12-15 heat exchangers on order for delivery between first of October 2008 and end of January 2009. Due to unforseen circumstances, the project to install these exchangers has been delayed until Spring 2010. My question is, what procedures/practices should be used to protect this...
