@kellnerp
Why do you go with 3-2-1 constraining? Is it so you can do a hand calc with the same setup? FEA doesn't care if it statically indeterminate, right? Also, shouldn't the BCs be setup how the real life model is?
I'm not correcting you, just trying to learn why, because from the other...
@otsy
Have you tried changing your SOLRAM setting much lower (like 128MB)? Your model isn't very big and I am pretty sure the only reason it is taking 8.5GB of memory is because you have your SOLRAM set at 7000MB.
As I was thinking about how much computing time is spent running analysis jobs on 2nd, 3rd and 4rth computers while actively setting up another FEA job on a main computer, I wondered how consultants factor that computing time into their cost proposals.
How do you charge for that? As an FEM...
Does anyone have experience using NEi Nastran for optimization, specifically using the Advanced Optimization module HEEDS?
If so, have you used it to change parameters used for geometry dimensions, number of geometry features, and other parameters from the CAD model or just to change parameters...
trainguy, thanks for your response. Do you have much experience using contacts in NEi Nastran? If so are you pleased with it's ability to handle complex contact setups?
I'm going to demo it but I also wanted other peoples opinions. Thanks.
I'm curious what people's thoughts are about whether NEi Nastran (with FEMAP) is comparable to ANSYS?
You can base it on whatever metrics you like, but some examples would be usability, ease of pre/post processing, solver speed, robustness, limitations, user community, technical support...
zer0c123, was this company in Davis California? I had a very similar experience right out of school. I was offered the job but declined because a different mechanical engineering job also gave me an offer at the same time (and this job was ACTUALLY mechanical, not software).
"a major problem with FE is that it gives you an answer, no matter how you state your problem
another problem with FE is that it won't give you an answer no matter how you state the problem"
haha. Very True.
Again, good points. Those scenarios are indeed frustrating.
You make the same argument against eng-tips though. Lot's of people us it as a crutch instead of trying something out for themselves first. Or they see someone state something and take that as the answer without fully...
ESPcomposites,
Thanks for your answer. I absolutely agree with what you listed as some of the downsides to FEA.
What I maintain is that people who use it as a crutch or have overconfidence in their results are probably bad engineers, FEA or no FEA.
I see a lot of throwing the baby out with...
GregLocock,
I just wanted to add that my previous post was not just about your specific comment and more about that comment reminding me of a sentiment that I see a lot on eng-tips posts. I very much appreciate the posts that put up and you taking the time to participate in the thread I...
"It'd be interesting to estimate how many hours are wasted due to mechanisms, boundary conditions, chasing little patches of red, rigid links and dubious load applications, compared with these more theoretical issues."
Probably the same amount of time spent figuring out where you got your...
Does anyone know if there is a way to get a Mechanica analysis to resume once it has lost it's network license half way through the run?
I've had Mechanica stop mid run, due to the license servers temporarily going down, a few times, and even though Pro/E quickly picks the license back up...
seymours2571,
You are right. I miss read your post, you did state that you were talking about memory allocation. I would think that that limitation wouldn't matter so much since upping SOLRAM value does not seem to help performance.
Agreed about your RAMdisk comments. I have yet to use a...
