    ASME VIII, I, UG-135 vs API 510

I brought up the issue with our customer and he disagreed at first and by the end of the conversation he said he didn't really care if there was a drain hole. So he kind of back pedaled when I told him all about the ASME code and what our inspector said. What a relief. Thanks for the backup. I...

    ASME VIII, I, UG-135 vs API 510

Please read thread292-168893 in the ASME section for a questions on API 510. Thank you.

    ASME VIII, I, UG-135 vs API 510

I am in a predicament and I need to hear from the experts. My customer insistes that there should not be drain hole in the bottom of an ell that is on the discharge piping of our PSVs. He Quotes API 510 where it states that we need either a rain cap or a drain (I don't have API 510 so I cannot...

    Rectangular Vessel

Thank you JTE that was exactly what I needed. I had overlooked that section when I went looking the first time. I was in too much of a rush. But I have since Pulled out the book (ASME Sec 8 DIV1), made all the calculations and even created a little spreadsheet to do the calcs in the future. In...

    Rectangular Vessel

I need to do some calculations on a rectagular pressure vessel. I don't think that there is anything in ASME Sec 8 Div 1 on rectangular vessels. What would be my best course of action. Really all I need a wall thinkness calc for square vessels. Any suggestions???

    Cooling large volumes of gas

Some good suggestions here. The big problem is not the lack of cooling in the existing cooler, it is the continuous increase in the suction temps to the cylinders. For expample. We start out with about 80 degF on our suction and as the the compressor runs it slowly approaches 120 degF. which in...

    Cooling large volumes of gas

To answer some questions. We test about twice a week for 4hrs. We would like to test for longer. We test compressors anywhere from 100HP units to 1300HP units. We currently use air cooler fan type cooler (like a giant automotive radiator). At best it will only cool our gas to about 20-30degF...

    Cooling large volumes of gas

Here is my situation. We are testing compressors in our shop that are destine for field use. To test we run the compressor through a closed loop with nitrogen as the compressing gas. As you can imagine the gas in loop heats up very quickly and we run into High temperatures on our compressor...

ASME Sec 8 Div 1 Code Case 2260

Thank you for the replies. I am planning to not rerate the vessels and make do with the vessels that we have in service. We may just build new vessels in the future.

ASME Sec 8 Div 1 Code Case 2260

Yes it is a vessel that is pressently in service but we would have to remove it to perform the needed hydro test for rerating. It is currently not operating at the higher pressure but may see the higher pressures in the future.

    intercooling 3 stage air compressor

I work for one of the larger compressor companies in the US and if there was such a rule of thumb I would love to know it. As it stand we analyes in detail each compressor cooler individually using the Temperature out of the reciprocating compressor cylinders and the excact dimensions of the...

ASME Sec 8 Div 1 Code Case 2260

I am trying to re-rate a pressure vessel from 550 up to around 600 psig, but the maximum MAOP from the standard code calculation is 551. But if I do the calculations using the Code case 2260 I can get 590 psig. The Maximum pressure is restricted due to the ellipsoidal head on each end, which has...

Starting a business but not quiting current job

I don't know of many engineers that work part time unless it is a new mother on some sort of part time maternity leave. You might be hard pressed to convince your boss to give you part time hours. As for starting a bussiness on the side, as you mentinoed it is not related to Enigneering so...

For all of you who are in the oil industry

Ashereng, You hit the nail on the head. To make money you need to do what it takes, and that is what I did and what I am doing still. I just feel this article is making it sound easier than it really is and (like most media) is telling only part of the story.

    Promotions in Engineering?

Senseless, If I had my time back I would have let the company that didn't want to transfer me know that I was serious and I would leave if I did not get what I wanted. I am sure I would have gotten my way. Let them know you are serious and they will most likely give you the raise you seem to...
