    Tapping .09 pure Titanium sheet

I have had great success tapping .07 thick 6AL4V titanium, #3-56 through, CNC with coolant, nothing special, regular cut taps (usually you need special taps for ti, I prefer YAW). I think I was about 1500 rpm, so 2700 for #1-72 may not be too far off. I would be careful about going too slow with...

Small Dia, Deep hole in Aluminium

I have been drilling .059" dia holes in aluminum at 3-3/4" deep (blind holes). I have had near perfect success although a bit "slow". I'm using gun drills from Eldorado Tools. They run at 10,000 rpm at .0007" per rev. They do require high pressure thru spindle coolant (using 1,000 psi). We run...

    Job Shop. ! ! !

Contact me at davengininnj@msn.com I've had some experience in dirt track components. There is a big market in the northeast and few suppliers. Dave

fanuc control all clear function for tool lengths 11m to 16m

Typical Fanuc format: O1 M00(RESET ALL OFFSETS TO 0?) #100=1 WHILE[#100LT100]DO1 G10G90P#100R0 #100=#100+1 END1 M30 This will set all offsets to zero. Maybe you can modify this to suit your needs? Dave

    Hi speed milling 6Al-4V titanium?

Actually nothing special as far as tooling. I found the cheapest generic tools worked as well as good quality in this application. I tried various coatings (Tin, TiAiN, etc) with no improvement. Dave

    Hi speed milling 6Al-4V titanium?

I thought I'd share the results of this project, started 18 months ago. I was fortunate enough to have many chances to try various combinations of speeds, feeds, tools and methods. By far the most reliable was to first pilot drill through with a #2 carbide center drill. Tool life was easily...

    Coolant Odor

Odor in coolant is generally caused by bacteria. The bacteria generally forms when a layer of oil (tramp oil) covers the top of the coolant, effectively "sealing" it from the presence of oxygen. I've had great luck using a cheap simple aquarium "bubbler" running 24hrs a day (costs only pennies)...

    Critical finish in ID sphere

I'm trying to get a "mirror" finish in an internal spherical dish in aluminum. Diameter is about 3/4 inch and depth is about .200 inch in 6061 aluminum in CNC lathe. So far the best we can do is machine and "lap" by finger with car polish. Anyone got any ideas?

    Fanuc 21m programming question

The Fanuc has a repeat function used in the G80 series commands. Example would be: G81 Z-20.0 R5.0 F100.0 K2 X100.0 K2 The K in these examples would drill twice at each location. Perhaps the programmer was anticipating a problem? Dave

Cad plating thickness on close tolerance diameters

One other option I occaisionaly use, ask engineering about specifying the part be final bored after plating, then a brush coating of something like a chem film for aluminum to protect the final cut surfaces.

    Hi speed milling 6Al-4V titanium?

I have an application to mill 2mm square "windows" thru 1mm thick 6Al-4V titanium. The "windows" require .5mm corner radii, so I plan to use 1mm dia carbide end mills. Quantities are 3,000 parts with 250 "windows" per part. I have CNC spindle speeds available to...

Maximum material conditions in geo tolerancing

When maximum material condition is specified in geometeric tolerancing, I understand that a hole near the upper limit of diameter will produce a "bonus" of additional tolerance for location. Will a hole near the lower limit of diameter create an effect of a "penalty" and...
