    Heat Exchanger Pass Partition Plates

    1. Taper is ok. Tapers are allowed in code construction and are common in industry. 2. No complications over 15psi; except below some comments: High pressure drop requirements (over 15psi) can significantly increase thickness of these plates. I once had to design a partition plate for 100%...

Radiography for Shell and Tube heat exchangers using ASME VIII

You need to choose RT based on service conditions, customer specifications, and the Code rules for the material and thicknesses that you are working to.

Gasket seating width on pass-partition plates (heat exchanger)

Sorry for late post, but figured in case anyone is also searching for this. Yes App 2. You can also reference TEMA RCB 11.7

Gasket seating width on pass-partition plates (heat exchanger)

The effective width (br) is half the width of the Partition thickness up to 1/2" pp thickness. The actual equation is: b0 = Gasket Width / 2 ; if b0 > 1/4", br = 0.5*(b0)^0.5 ;; if b0</= 1/4", br = b0 It is probably easiest to change the gasket material. Another option, depending on...

UT testing in lieu of RT in High Temp Power Piping

Hi all, I have a customer looking for confirmation that they can substitute phased array UT testing for RT in high pressure/temp P91 and P22 steam piping. I believe the boiler manufacturer only wants to accept RT and our customer wants to use UT. I looked in power piping and it looks like you...

Is a welded tubesheet joint a category B or C?

Your configuration is showing Cat C Type 7 joints. RT/UT is not applicable for these joints since there is no applicable efficiency. They need to meet UW13 for corner joints, and you can meet your efficiency of 1 requirement on the vessel. There are other examples of this case in Code...

    Welding SA387 Gr22 to SA516 GR70 - N

Thank you for the input. I appreciate it. I looked at the product data sheet on the SAW filler/flux combination LA71 w/ 880M : F7P8-EM14K-H8 The published data in PWHT condition is 63ksi yield, 80ksi tensile, 31% elongation and 121ft-lbs @ -80F The 80ksi would be stronger than the SA516...

    Welding SA387 Gr22 to SA516 GR70 - N

I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation (pros/cons/discussion) for filler materials for SAW SA387 GR22 (P5A Gr1) to SA516 GR70 Normalized (P1 Gr2). I am working to ASME Sec IX and ASME Sec VIII D1 and D2 vessels. I need to expand a weld procedure to incorporate the dissimilar weld metals...

RT for welding pipe to flange

Are you working to a CODE? If you are strictly working to ASME Sec VIII D1 for a pressure vessel, then Refer to Fig UW-3 and UW-12. If you have a slip-on flange it is a Cat C and RT is not applicable (not required) even if the whole vessel calls out for a degree of examination. If you need to do...

    surface roughness on tube hole?

There are more than 1 type of tubesheet (boiler tubes, condensers, heat exchangers, etc..). If you have a HEI Condenser then HEI says 500 RMS, typically TEMA heat exchangers have 125-250 RMS tubesheet hole finish. If you are looking at enhancing the tubejoint with a surface finish then you...

Similar carbon steel to A516 grade 70

I agree w/ SA105 and SA350 LF2. There is also, SA266 GR2. The SA350 comes with impact testing and the SA105 does not.

Piping Loads on a Surface Condenser

From a vendor perspective, the allowable loads are calculated per HEI for Surface Condensers Appendix D (simplified WRC107 calculations). You simply look at the max moments (load=0) and max load (moment 0), then you make the linear plot. Then you check where your pipe load lands and it is...

    Design or calculations for davits

I agree with Gr2vessels comments about a simple structural calc. I made a spreadsheet for calculating custom davits for large covers (I just did a 54" dia 3200# cover w/ davit) basically I do the following: -look at the stiffness a cantelever beam - using moment of inertia etc... (I usually use...

    ASME SA235 Gr P2

Thanks for the help. I think it is probably a typo on the U1 form....should be fun.

    ASME SA235 Gr P2

Does anyone know what material ASME SA235 Gr P2 is? It is called out as a seamless pipe on an old 1964 U1-form. If I had to guess it would be 1/2Cr 1/2Mo, but I have not had success finding it (is it similar to SA335 P2?).
