A revolved cut won't work because, as you said, generating a pattern that works is problematic (as well as a sketch plane).

Hmm, I figured out it's the selection filter. But the toolbar is acting wonky and won't let me clear the filters. Good old Solidworks, buggy as hell, it never disappoints.
I guess I'll just spend the rest of the afternoon clicking the toolbar until a combination of clicks clears the filters.

Now that I am using SolidWorks 2007, I see they have managed to come up with even more nebulous and mystifying error messages than ever before. This is certainly an accomplishment of sorts, as the software was already in my personal top five of most baffling error messages of all time.
