CivilTom -
I have really enjoyed reading this post. Best I can tell, you are somewhere between being the scum of the earth and you will never ever work in this town again to a normal guy that wants to get paid what you are worth.
Let us know how it works out for you.
Best of luck.
A question for anyone making the "you gave your word" to company #1 arugument.
How long must the OP stay at his current poistion to satisfy your sense of "right", six months, 1 year, 5 years?

thanks in advance.
My thoughts/answers to your questions.
1. Yes it is usual for companies/Managers to tell you they are gonna promote you and then not promote you. Don't feel bad. It's not you it goes on everywhere. Consider your Manager MAY get a bonus based on his budget/expeditures so keeping you on board and...

Does anyone have expierience sending out cold resumes and cover letters to employers? YES By cold I mean sending them your stuff without a specific job posting.
-Does this appear desperate? Probably
-Does this put you at the mercy of the company, taking all your negotating...
You mention in your post "I think this is a good company". Why? Do you have firsthand knowledge of how they operate and treat their employees or do they have a really good PR staff?
As far as a salary offer goes, there is no harm in countering. When you counter, you should be prepared to "build...
