Hi everyone
I'm sorry if my question is very basic, but I've been reading on the Unified Screw Threads and seem to misunderstand the nomenclature.
How were the UNC and UNF standard defined? Why is for example 2 1/2 - 4 UNC but 2 5/8 is 4-UN and then the 2 3/4" is 4UNC?
Is there a common...
Hi tbuelna ,
Thanks for your reply,
I am under the impression that solely measuring the hardness at the center and at the surface will not be enough to determine the heat treatment...
For example, this will give no indication as to the yield strength...
Hi guys,
We have a project in which the refurbishment of a servomotor was given to an external company.
This equipment will only be installed for another 10 years, before a larger project will replace all the equipment in the substation.
Therefore, the company was told that no changes to the...
Thanks for the tips!
When you calculate your Present Value with all the maintenance costs of the worn compressor, what time period do you consider?
Do you consider the foreseen compressor life as a present value for the maintenance costs?
Thanks!
Hi!
In UG-79, is the minimum thickness after forming supposed to be larger than the minimum thickness calculated?
Can the minimum thickness after forming be smaller than the one calculated?
I did not find this clear when reading the article..
Thanks!
Hi yall!
I have been having quite a hard time with a question that seems so simple; what is the minimum wall thickness allowed when performing ultrasonic examination?
I thought that it would be the minimum wall thickness calculated as per the Code, however, I have found UG-16(c) and UG-79 that...
Hi guys,
I am a young engineer with no particular experience in compressed air systems. We have about 300 5-stage air compressors compressing air at 3600 psig with a flow rate of about 29 cfm.
My employer has asked me to develop end of life criteria for these compressors. These end of life...
Well if that is the case they need to be removed from service. Our law states ASME and NBIC as requirements but I think that our Jurisdiction can accept pressure vessels made with other standards if they are judged equivalent. This particular vessel is a Voest-Alpine from Germany.
I have a...
Hey stanweld,
Thanks for your reply. There has already been a calculation done using the Section VIII Div I of 2010, which from what was said in this thread has smaller SF than the one from 1980. The minimum wall thickness calculated was bigger thant the one measured, which is not good...
The 3.5:1 safety factor of today is in the Division I of the B&PV right?
As I understood it the Division II is more application based than Division I. Are the safety factors the same?
Should I use API even if my pressure vessels are not petroleum related (solely dry air)?
Hey Guys!
I've found a thread that pretty much answers my question.
It states the following :
INTERPRETATION 95-19
Subject: RC-1000 General Requirements
1995 Edition
Question: When the NBIC references "the original code of construction," is it
required to use the edition and addenda of that...
Hi,
We own about 900 pressure vessels dating to about 1980. How do I calculate the minimum thickness required for these pressure vessels? I am under the impression that I need to use the ASME B&PV but I am curious as to what edition I need to use. It seems to me using the last edition (2010) is...
Thanks!
Do the calculations you refer to only assume tension loads or do they assume both shear and tension loads combined? Most calc's I've found on the website solely assume tension on bolt (and members).
Eng-tips is also used FOR work :) so you should technically be able to use this tool at...
Hey
I have read the threads and opened most of the links. Of course I can't be sure which one you're talking about.
I was more looking for a recommendation, and not calculations. I deal with many different designs that I purchase as part of my job, I go through design reviews and equipement...
Hi Guys,
I have read quite a few threads about thread engagement calc's on the site, but I would like to know if any of you know if ASME or any other standards recommend a certain thread engagement (ex. 1xd) for certain general situations.

- SS...
